Dini, If you have a misalligned or bent crankshaft pointer, it will not indicate the correct static timing. Assuming a good crankshaft timing pointer, You need to EXACTLY line up the crankshaft pointer with the correct timing mark on the main pulley as well as the camshaft timing marks. It sounds li...

Hi Brian, I'm no expert on this matter but I think you are probably right when you say it was probably a bit of overkill on Alfa's part. My 4 cylinder FIAT had a fixed mechanical tensioner and this was never a problem as long as the tension was adjusted correctly initially. This is true for the majo...

Hi Ben, sorry for the late reply on this. I have had good success with my rebuilt hydraulic tensioner. Initially someone who had owned the car before me had plugged the tensioner hole because it leaked. I had carefully rebuilt the tensioner and it works fine with no leaks. I have been posting update...

:D

Just a quick update as promissed WRT to the tensioner rebuild.

5K now with no problems. A little sweating, but entirely acceptable in my opinion.

Will report back at 10K.

Good stuff Daniel,

I'll know who to contact then if/when mine fails.

Out of curiosity, how is the new seal held in place?

David, my understanding of the nature of seals is at best limited, however, what you said seems to make sense. If there is tolerenece on the outer sealing portion of the seal at low oil pressures, then it will indeed leak around the seal. This is why I think the teflon is good in these cases. In som...

Daniel,

that is some beautiful work.

An excellent solution to the limitations of the current shaft seal.

Bravo!

Hydraulic Tensioner Rebuild Report

Hi all, I just wanted to report back on my hydraulic tensioner/detensioner rebuild. Over 1000 km now and no leaks. Now some information: 1. I used the latest Alfa Romeo rebuild kit for the tensioner/detensioner. 2. I was meticulous about cleaning the tensioner/detensioner, in particular, the vertica...

Timing Belt Question (not the usual)

After a successfully laborious effort of replacing the head gaskets to get rid of those weeping water leaks I found that my water pump leaked immediately after the replacement of the timing belt. I know I disobeyed the golden rule of replacing the water pump, but my question is this. Should the newl...

Hi Barry, Mystery solved. I think this is one for the books. I called Luigi Amori from Italservice in South Australia and after going through the usual problem checking he asked if I rebuild the heads. I responded that the heads had not been touched. He then suggested that what possibly happened is ...

Hi Barry, Yeah, indeed I though this might be the case as well and I might have expected this for the second head that goes on as it is easier to have this happen, however I was very careful and checking with a light and mirror revealed this not to be the case as the heads look well seated all aroun...
