But I am seriously thinking of going back to a standard 4.1 diff ... too many gear changes on some of the tracks we go to...

Nope! It was the tailshaft! :o I was told later that I could have put my foot on the clutch to stop the tailshaft spinning, but at the point in time, I didn't know what was broken, there were lots of strange sounds coming from where my foot was (thought the flywheel was coming thru the floor!!), so ...
