any tricks to replacing the rack in a GTV6

Post by Keith »

I want to remove the rack from my 84 GTV6, is there anything I should be aware of before I start? Any special tools?

Get a tan, frequent the gym and learn to talk to the ladies.

You will get a new rack in there in no time!

so nothing special to get the bolts loose or to remove the rack out the side? Sounds easy.

Keith,
This is basic sort of job. Is it a manual or power rack?

Its the original manual rack. I looked closer at it last night and it looks easy enough, 4 bolts and a really tight fit. I'm thinking I'll have to remove the exhaust headers to make it easier to get at the mounting bolts and it should slide out the left (drivers) side.
I think the rack guide bushing inside the passenger side of the rack is worn causing a popping sound every now and then when I turn the wheels.

It helps to unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the engine.

Kevin,

Being the laziest typiste in town, here's a crappy extract out of the manual. Hope you can follow it. If not ,ask more questions.

Thanks guys. I havent posted on here in quite a while as my GTV6 has been doing very well. It seemed easy enough to remove, but I've "assumed" things like this before and had it bite me.

Just read this post. Mats, you crack me up!!!!

The suggestion to raise the motor is a good move. My Biturbo you have to take the motor mounts loose and shove the rngine forward all the way to the radiator. Otherwise, your vulgar vocabulary increases ten-fold.....

One thing to help preserve the rack's mounts (expect Mats to entertain this comment) is to keep any oil off them.

I'm in the middle of this and am having problems getting the rack out. I've got it unbolted and the steering wheel shaft off but can't see how it fits throught the drivers side opening. I've got the engine mounts unbolted and the engine jacked up about 1".

Some one give the tip that is going to get this rack out.
