I got this part from Digikey (PN2222AD26ZCT) - but I think it was not a transistor generally supplied for MS which is why it might differ from this pic in my installation.
I used this photo as a reference - so can totally see what you are talking about:

I think I used the 'mark' on the top of the transistor to determine orientation - not the curvature of the trans. You can see the marked terminal (leg) is on the left in both instances. Perhpas it is in the wrong way around - I'm a complete beginner in electronics so was winging much of this...
The circuit definitely works though - would it work if it was reversed?

ah thanks again mike, thats cleared it all up for me... i dunno if mixing the emitter and collector is a big deal, i should imagine so since there are markings for it.

but that makes sense to me now and meshes with steves instructions (ie, bent emitter)
