GTV6, ex Zender, turning into a racer

Post by PietereQ »

So here she's. Bought her 2 months ago or so, in Germany, it's '85 GTV6 Zender edition, as you can see the car requires restoriation, which hopefully will commence in summer. Couldn't expect more for the price, but the car lacks some decals -look at scudetto :( and has to have the job done on suspension and engine. Anyway it's GTV6 and I could't think of better car for me. The original color was rosso alfa but, previous owner repainted her into this green "british racing green wannabe" metallic.

And they say that only American cars have the license for engines sticking out of the hood

Are you sure that is not an Alfa original colour? A friend has a GTV4 in that colour or similar and it hasn't been resprayed.
I'll have a look for a paint code for you.

Thanks. Mats, this may very well be the original alfa color but I'm pretty sure that the car was originally painted red - take a closer look at 3rd pic from the bottom, see this red chip? I tried to make photos at such angle so peeling paint is not too visible 8) The situation is worse especially in areas around window/windshield seals :(

I was just trying to console you, it might not be "green 'british racing green wannabe' metallic" but an original Alfa colour code.. :)

I don't know the price you pay for it (sorry, for her !) but,
when looking at the pics, it seems that not a lot of money will be
necessary to make it shinning as much as the most beautiful one
that you can see on the forum.

What's the brand of the wheels you have on it ?

Mats, thanks you're so kind  :D luckily I'm "getting along" with the color.... till the restoration
Billy, bought her for 2000 euros, but I mean seriously, when i look underneath the car I keep wondering how the hell is she holding it; lots, lots of rust. The rims are the 15" Rials don't know the model name.

Hi PietereQ, nice GTV!
I was wondering your gtv may be one of the Mike Kenyon of Chaparral Motorsport Ltd. of Westbury, Wiltshire modified gtvs????
The bonnet is the same, or is that part of the zender bodykit?
Theres a write up on the main page under our cars, its good stuff.

Matt, thanks, my cars' history still remains a secret to me, i bought it through a middleman. But the hood cover is deffinately part of the zender bodykit, I rather doubt it was modified in UK. The only extra thing I found o the car are the mods to the suspension: adjustable koni yellows all round and apparently eibach progessive springs on the rear, yet the bars were left stock

I guess some of you guys don't hang out on AlfaBB as here so I have posted some pics presenting the restoration progress with my car. Hope this can be helpful to someone.
Stripping her was much more difficult many nuts/screws/bolts were rusty and many of them broke. My buddy (he's a SAAB freak) helped me with it. :)
Image

And though it's an alfiat, 146's have nice freighting capabilities:D
Image

After that, I took her to the bodywork mechanic; she's now bassically a shell on four wheels.
Image

Happily no rust under those nasty Zender sideskirts
Image

Ok as I'm missing some of the photos of early stage of body restoration, so that's what was wrong with her:
-Rotten "A" struts - where they meet fenders - usual spot
-Bad Rust in engine bay wall where it meets left fender
-Everything below windscreen was pretty badly eaten by rust.
-huge corrosion below on driver's seat floor compartment, this had to be cut out abot 40cm x 50cm piece
- few smaller rusty spots on the floor.
- rust on both sideskirts on inner sides
- spare wheel area badly eaten by rust
- only very minor rustspots located in few other places
Welding is flat and continous.

As the rust in engine compartment was pretty bad and the left "A" strut was in bad shape left fender had to be cut out. Here welded in:

Pic from the engine bay

New floor recreated and welded back in. Mechanic did a good job.
Image

Right "A" strut base recreated and welded
Image

Left "A" just as it looked before repair. Already fixed.

And both sideskirts fixed:

And bad rust in the trunk
Image

I'll post some pics soon, as I took her yesterday to the spray shop... finally after one month of delay.

Looks so good...nice to see repair rather than death in scrap yard.

Keep up the great work!!

What are the extra metal boxes near front and rear bumper on early pics? part of the Zender support?

Exactly. These are the supports for Zender bumpers; steel energy absorbtion bars plus molded foam to fit the bumpers
