This guy is not worth the shovel, Evo2!
I just wish he had been more honest and upfront with me and now I just want my money back from him and to be free of the whole mess so I can move on!
The car is being brought to Melbourne in a few weeks and then everything will actually begin.
I have made some friends down here who are keen to get stuck in and help me get it all going.
One is an engine builder who has done stints in Europe with F3000 and F1 teams (Williams) in the late 90s, one is a poultry farmer (yep!) that races his GTA GTV6 successfully. He has CNC machine access and designs and constructs gorgeous parts for the cars- sumps for the 24v conversion, thermostat conversion parts and headers. I’ll show some pics eventually. And another is a former mechanic that builds tube frame chassis out of chromoly for sport sedans and is a great fabricator.
Here’s the plan:
GTA 3.2 crank in 100mm bore block.
Wossner pistons.
complete seal and gasket kit from okp.
Dawie sent head gaskets with the block, although we may Re-make these out of copper.
I will likely go for some mild port work, possibly 1mm oversized valves. I want a street engine that can be tracked regularly, rather than a race engine that can be driven on the street-
Saying that, though, Dawie’s stage 1 cams appear quite mild and that would be my mistake in asking for something like that.
It’s possible we may use another set of cams- probably JK regrinds (I’ll be in touch soon, Jim!)
Cams will be computer simulated once the compression of the pistons is worked out exactly (CC the crowns).
I am pretty sure that some rods will find their way into the engine as well. It’s cheap insurance.
Looking to do a large purchase from AHM to get their throttles and some of their pulley wheels and probably their tensioner- hoping to increase efficiency by running lighter reciprocating parts where possible.
I will run a Davies Craig electric water pump as well, to remove some drag.
I have a Motec M84 to run it. I can buy a ready made loom for the 24v engine.
Driveline wise- someone is keen to buy the Maserati box off me (wants to run paddles on his transaxle car- could be very interesting) so I have found a complete Corvette driveline that I’m getting freight quotes on.
This is the g’box, torque tube and tailshaft, bellhousing, shifter box and linkages.
Hoping to have a bellhousing adaptor fabricated to marry the corvette bellhousing with the alfa block, using a stock 24v bell housing as a pattern.
I have the ultra lightweight flywheel from AHM with their twin plate clutch setup.
I’m not sure about this. It’s very very light and I don’t like the idea of running such a small diameter twin plate clutch.
This is another thing that the previous idiot recommended. We shall see if we can put it to use.
I think the flywheel will be ok, but hopefully I can run a bigger clutch than the tiny one it came with.
Pretty sure the rear floor (and probably the stock fuel tank) will need some Massaging or new sheet fabricated
Brakes - I have GTA series 2, 330mm calipers up front, with some Tarox discs and will run GTV6 front brakes as outboards on the rear with a dedicated handbrake caliper.
Think I’ll try to use a BMW master cylinder and I’ve seen somewhere on this site that a 147 booster clears the RH side valve cover. Either way, I’ll be trying to ditch the crossover bar (RH drive cars).
Body wise, Kevin, thanks for your help with the drawings a while back, but I have purchased a SA 3.0 Bonnet for the car.
The Zender kit is sold.
75 Evo front bar and GP kit to go on the car.
Zender Milano wheels sold as well and I’m likely to go with Japanese 2 or 3 piece wheels once the car is together.
Engine bay is going to be seam welded and I think we will try to attach some strengthening plates to the underside of the forward chassis rails.
This has been done by a few shops over here, with great results. Apparently the first thing everyone notices is how light the steering gets when you stiffen the front!
I would like a half cage in the rear as well.
Ive got a quick steering rack as well.
Suspension will stay how it is: RS kit, 105 castor rods, and knuckle risers.
I’ll get some RS away bars to fine tune it, and I also have my eye on some drop spindle uprights that Beninca has made.
I’ll start taking some pictures of all my bits once it’s all in one place
