Hello from NL - introducing my 75TB

Post by jeroen75 »

After reading and reading for many years, I suddenly had a (rare) bright moment and realized I had no account yet...
Well, after some delay I would like to introduce myself and my car.

So, I’m Jeroen from The Netherlands, infected by my father with the ‘virus’ at a very young age and working in the automotive industry (engineer).

After owned some Alfetta GTV’s and 75’s I settled down and only have one ‘project’ car to play with.
It started it’s live as an ’91 2.0TS and was completely original when I bought it in 2009 (apart from 164 wheels).

Since I’m not favoring soft, sluggish rides (even a stock 75 doesn’t do it for me) and like going fast on closed environments, I decided to change the 75 slowly into a trackday car.

So far the, non-visual, modifications are;
- 1.8T engine (stock, with 1.2bar boost)
- RS suspension kit, 30mm anti roll bar, caster ball joints…., all the usual stuff.
- 305mm brakes / 4-pot brembo’s
- And lots of smaller modifications

I have been hammering it around the racetrack (mostly Zandvoort, NL) quite a lot this year, trying to improve my driving skills and laptimes.

It’s still holding together nicely (~240K km’s on the engine!)!

Coming winter, there should be some more upgrades ready; modified rear wheel alignment, outboard brakes and figuring out how to improve the front roll centre, further weight reductions etc.

Side project is to switch to a programmable ECU with FMIC, different turbo etc. etc.
Anyway, I’m sure there’s a lot more to say, but for now some pictures;

Hi Jeroen
Pity you can't get a set of 75 Evo stub axles ( uprights) as that help keep your roll centre on front consistent when you lower the front of the car . I think their about 25mm longer on the section between the stub axle and bottom ball joint section . I'm definitely not a fan of them been cut and welded ( a modification image elsewhere ) but that's just me . I was looking at the race retro parts available for old racing ford escorts which I saw some adapt uprights to fit the Alfa 116 series.
If there were enough takers we could get some cast .
Are you going to make the rear Dedion yourself ?

Hi Kevin,
I did have some contact with a few (known) sources in AU and the US, it's quite tempting, but I first need to check the flipped balljoint route (and now your escort lead  )...

About the Dion, I'm planning to do the cutting and welding myself using a jig, let's see how that turns out.

Too bad I've just bought a '69 GT Junior, so i need to divide my attention

The upside down ball joint requires a minimum of 16" rims.

Thanks!
Investigations are continuing 8) The current space between the Nut and rim (16" compomotive) is around 35mm, so there's room...

Other question; the clutch release bearing needs replacement so i'm looking to upgrade the clutch assembly as a whole.
I have TS and TB clutch assemblies laying around; what would be the one to start with?

I'm thinking about a sintered plate (sprung) with an upgraded pressure plate and potentially some weight reductions.
The TB assy should be 'stronger' from the start, so it should be an obvious choice, is it?

IMHO it's time to take the opportunity and go with a more widely available setup. For example, see if there is a tilton or AP clutch assembly which can fit in clutch housing. Mende @ teamcompetezione.dk has it and so does RJ in Florida. The advantage of this move is their assemblies are a lot lighter than the Alfa one. And I suspect replacement discs of different materials would be easier to find.

All I did with mine was just lighten both flywheels. I should have spent the extra money and gone with an AP or Tilton. I used an unsprung disc for a while. Very light weight, but too easy to burn especially when loading the car on my trailer.

About the wheels, same thing, if you decide to go with 17" wheels, sell your 16" wheels. Tell the potential buyer, "buddy if you don't stick with 5x98mm your car is no longer worthy of an Alfa badge! Buy my wheels!". Then proceed to modify your hub to the more popular 5x114.3mm setup.

Now instead of a choice of 2 wheels, you have about 10,000 wheels to choose from at lower prices.

I had a gtv6 twin plate clutch in my 3.7 24v and had no problems ..... However I had the pressure plate re tensioned . Helix clutches in uk offer a sprung paddle clutch off a 75 3.0 which I'd pretty good . My mate who races a 75 3.2,24v is sending a complete twin plate uni to Helix with torque specs so see what they will make for him . So will keep you posted on that .

If you looking for 17" compomotive rims cheap now check these out :D

75evo, Kevin, Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have some leads for an uprated clutch on which i'm waiting, at the moment i'm thinking to just get a new (organic) disk and have the pressure plate uprated, potentially some lightening of the flywheel.
Don't want to spend it all on a expensive AP or Tilton unit (clutch assy + flywheel = lot's of Euro's), next to that the current 2.0TS clutch still performs nicely after a couple of years trackday driving... Reason for the change is the incredible noises the release bearing makes  and the power upgrade will be something for next winter.

Same for the wheels; spring i bought a set of Nankangs NS-2R as a test and they surprised me! Good stable grip and they do not overheat! well worth the money!
When i'm in need for a new set i will explore the PCD/wheels possibilities :D

On the balljoint conversion; Merc w220 parts have arrived, so i will start to play with those soon!

Small issue is to divide the available time between all other ladies in (and around) the house;
