24v cam timing adjustment

Guys,

Exhaust cam for cyl 1,2,3 is a wee bit off the mark.

Question is, can I get away with
1-lock the 3 of the cams
2-mark the cam belt cogs and the pulley teeth with a white-marker,
3-release the tensioner,
4-Partially unmount the belt on exhaust cam 1,2,3 pulley
5-Undo exhaust cam 1,2,3 from the pulley taper,
6-Turn the exhaust cam 1,2,3 so the marking lines up
7-Mount the pulley back on
Et voila, j’ai fini!

What do you guys think?

You can but it all depends on how easy the cam pulley releases .. otherwise it goes a bit pear shape from there . I have done it a few times.

That’s is the ONE thing that I’m scared of. I once tried to take a pulley off a 24v pulley from a cam, and the puller couldn’t get it off. Luckily the cam was out of the engine, so eventually a press was used.

How do the workshops deal with stuck pulleys on an FWD car? Especially the rear bank, it would be a bloody nightmare.

Luckily the RWD cars have some space.

i didnt loosen the belt and just loosen the cam bolt for one full turn, then used homemade puller (plate with two hooks that go in the cam gear holes and screw in the middle that presses onto cam screw head) to loosen it from taper, than 25mm wrench and adjust the cam, hold it in place and tighten the bolt back.

Z, the dealership in SA always quoted for new pulleys in service on the FWD cars as a lot did break on removal with pullers. Also an infinite more amount did not break so the client was then refunded the amount if all went smoothly. Follow Alan’s advice on tool !! Hey a Alan post update of your projects please on the forum !! Or even if it goes back a bit . Enjoy reading and looking at your engineering !

Hey Guys ,
My other toy is a 916 Phase 3 3.2 Spider, due to not much room I made a special slim puller , I have now changed the timing belt 3 times with removing the timing gears with no issue . Carefully put the puller on the gear with a rag under it,once you have tension on the pulley tap the centre puller bolt and the pulley will come off without any damage.

Mate do you have a photo of the puller?

The pulley you have is different from the 164 24V pulley but in principle it should work the same. I'm looking to buy a 3-jaw puller

Please view the photos , the longer bolt is for the step in gear centres.
From the end of the bolt head screwed out to the end of the leg is 52 mm.
