Well actually it isn't "3.0" but just "3" the marking looks like this:

I scanned the engine for 3 hours and these were the only markings that I came across. Ok, even if this could be 3.0 liter, why would the previous owner keep the 2.5 plenum and valve covers? Why would he somewhat remove the marking on the block? It's turning more into a detective story...

Pietere,

That symbol and the 3 D & S in the rectangle as you have described is on three 2.5 L motors I have. One other 2.5 has the symbol and 4 D & S so it does not relate to the engine size.

I have the same markings on my euro spec 2.5. I checked with local alfa main dealer this week as to the meaning of these symbols, they have told me they will have an answer by the end of the week, since they have directed the query to head office, Italy. All I know is that I got used to the performance of mine. It wasnt until I drove another low mileage 2.5 last week, I realised that mine goes like a rocket. I wonder if alfa built some with hotter cams or something, and stamped the cylinder heads accordingly? Are your headers marked on the outboard sides? mine have machine marks on them, and the previous and only owner since the dealership says he never had any mod work done.

Guess I'll stick with 2,5 liter option then :( Gee I really had this moment of "the sudden extra bonus suprize euphory"
@MJR Mine has also some markings on the headers, but AFAIK there were no special versions of 2,5 v6 available in eurospec GTV6

Pete

Ah well, I hope alfa can shed some light on what the stamp marks mean. Its very frustrating not to know what has been done to mine, I also have some machine marks on the intake runners, almost like grinding marks.weird. I cant find 2.5 or 3.0 stamped anywhere at all on mine, even behind the belt cover.

ignore the 2.5 and go with the 4  4litre v6 sounds much more impressive!

Question

Post by MALDI »

As for the block, shouldn't you be able to tell from the serial number stamped on the block (just behind the left side head) what block size you have?

2.5L is AR01911 * Axxxxx *
3.0L is AR06124 * Axxxxx *

Checked out two 3 liter engines today: indeed they do have a different engine number (AR06124) than the 2.5 liter (AR01911).
