Is the heads/motor warped?
if so they might change size again on warm up so milling would not help. you might need to oven bake to get them even them mill. if the coolant kept the inside temp even then there should be no warping.
also check the cams for warp.
BTW where does the knock mount on a 24V and is there only one?
Two knock sensors on 24V, both mounted under the pipe that connects waterpump with stat.
