Location of Chassis number

Hi fellows.
I am attempting to register my Alfa Romeo Callaway in Spain. They want to see the chassis number, not the VIN on the plate under the windscreen.
According to the owner's manual it is stamped into the firewall under the passenger vent below the windscreen. For the life of me I can't see it under there. Anyone ever seen their's? Is it covered by the fire protection batting? This is making me nuts as I cannot register the car without it.
Please help if you have any advice.
