Hi all,

I'm just about to start tearing apart my 24v. the engine is sitting on a pallet ready to be put up on the stand, but i want to crack the crank bolt loose before mounting it to the stand.

whats the best way to lock the flywheel to keep the engine from turning over?

pull the plugs out and fill a cilinder with thin rope.. You will compress the rope against the head and stop the crank from turning further. Remember that you need to make sure the valves are closed in that cilinder!

Just use an air impact gun and it will come off real nice. Takes about ten seconds and nothing needs to be loaded up at all.

if that doesn't work, is there any harm in wedging a pipe between some of the flywheel bolts and the skid it's sitting on?

also, what size socket do I need for it?

I'd MUCH rather do that than loading up a conrod.

From memory it's 41mm(?), it's listed about a hundred times around this site so do a search.
Or just measure it.

Air gun always works well as it send shockwaves . Probably have to machine the outside of the socket as they don't normally fit like the Gedore type into the pulley . Best use two people as you can wedge a bar in flywheel studs real close to flywheel so you don't bend them . Only use bar to wedge if using air gun . If using pure leverage bars don't do this as you will bend the flywheel studs . Lastly you can copy the Alfa tool that fits into the flywheel teeth .
Sometimes it can take up to three minutes of constant shockwaves to crack the bolt .

I took a electric impact gun to it.... pulled the trigger for about half a second, and it was off! I guess I really over thought this one.
lets hope the rest of the tear down and rebuild goes just like this!

The EMPI VW flywheel lock works great.

Part# 5003

Usually about $10 on eBay with shipping. You want to use this when you torque that nut back on. Also for us Americans living in the land of inches and feet it's a 1-5/8" socket.
