Rod bolt question

Post by DP »

Any opinions on rod bolts? Replace them when rebuilding? Is this absolutely necessary?

I'm doing lightened/balanced Venolia pistons (maybe 11:1 per Zamani - but I need to research fuel, etc.) then shot peened rods/balanced. Thinking about doing flywheel, knife cutting crank (like Martin's Callaway motor).

Thanks!
Don

DP,

I didn't swap them during my rebuild, but if I were to do it again, I would put in new rod bolts just to keep it safe. But if you measure it and find no cracks or stretch, you can reuse them.

Knife cutting crank? Where abouts on the crank does this happen? What advantages does it have? Do you mean Knurling?
Cheers Tim.

Maybe I'll pop for new ones.... not sure yet. I think they're $15-20 each. Thanks Zamani.

Knife cutting - or maybe it's knife edging... not sure. I may have some photos and I'll try to post them. It's basically reducing the mass of the crank, making it more 'aero dynamic' ??? to reduce windage in the crank case. I'm not sure how much this helps but it's quite common on racing motors.
Thanks,

DP,

Ask DiFatta. Maybe cheaper from them. I thought they were $12 a piece. SO 12 X 12 = $144. Good for another 5-10 years of abuse.

Okay, sounds like a plan - thanks guys.

I'm wondering who to buy all my parts from now. Has anyone seen that rebuild on Alfabb? The 4 banger GTV or GTA? Wow, someone had time on their hands!
Thanks,
Don P.
