2013 Silverstone Classic ( 300hp beats 500hp !)

Post by kevin »

As been deprived of these beautiful Alfa touring cars in South Africa I thought it would be my only chance to see four of them in action all together in two races over the weekend at Silverstone . Thanks to Steve for organising the trip , accommodation and introducing me to the drivers as they are his mates . I took quite a lot of pics which created some interest in the technology and restrictions the cars were governed to .
What was very interesting as discussed in other topics was how simple it was for a 300 hp Alfa 156 to beat a 500hp Ford Cosworth . When I thought it was maybe the driver I was corrected as their were four of these Cosworth that were racing . The 156 of Neil started middle of pack so it had to work its way past these cars . What was very apparent is the Alfa could put down all its power and shift through that sequential box without even tapping off through twisties while you could see the rS500 drivers feathering it through the corners . By that stage the 156 was long gone .
Their was also a big difference in pace between the 1999 156 SuperTouring compared to 2002 156 S2000 . This obviously due to the rules governing at that time . Ie the 1999 156 had 300hp , weighed 975kg , bigger brakes , engine placed further back and a six speed sequential box . The 2002 156 had a single throttle body , weighed 100kg more and engine was ahead of the steering rack as in standard car .
So for me it was a real education in development of handling , braking and ability to put power down through bends with minimum steering deflection ( trick differentials) that beat raw power . Gonna post a whole bunch of pics which include adjustable front and rear Antiroll bars from inside the car .
First. Pics of cars that were there .

Another SuperTouring 156 owned by Neil Smith who won on Saturday beating the Honda in the final lap . He was disqualified later through having two wheels off track so had to start from back of pack on the Sunday . In car footage showed he was in the right but it was to late for Clerk of course to make amends

The 155 that started Alfa on the victory path . Unfortunately it broke a rim under breaking and went straight into the barriers . This is the before pic

Some pics of the SuperTouring 156 . As the rules were " more relaxed" the engine was pulled and induction side was reversed . The exhaust was housing inside the tunnel so the underside of car could be closed up . See the two levers inside the car that control the cable to adjust the antirol bars . See yellow cable .
Neil prefers just to run single plugs as he found no difference in power between two plugs however the other team car runs two plugs .

Some pics of S2000 car . Love these headers . They actually increase in size by 2mm about 200mm from port . Even though they were restricted by the small throttle body see the size of the air box after the TB . A proper Hewland box fitted . Amazing they got 270 hp as its same casting as original head and block .

Awesome!!!!

I'll be in the UK in 2 weeks. Let me know if there are any of these events. These events are simply awesome! Neil Smith is really an awesome driver.

This and the Rolling Thunder series which AHM has his 500 bhp 33 2.0 Rotrex runs in. You know Adie is one hell of a driver when his FWD 33 can pass a 500 bhp Impreza at Cadwell Park!

There are just so many of these awesome events in the UK and Europe!

BTW Kev, the S2000 156 was driven by Dymoke, the 156 ST was driven by Smith, what about the early Giovanardi 156 Touring car in the first pic? That is the first version and I'm guessing it has the same type of mods as Smith's car?
