Brake upgrade problem?

Post by matt »

Hi guys new to this great forum an need help with a recent budget brake up grade i ve done. Background as follows: stock '83 gtv 2.0 with worn rotors needing attn, decided to base upgrade on gtv6 stock rotors and volvo girling 4 pot calipers.
So i got new brembo gtv6 vented rotors (I re drilled 4 stud pattern), new brake lines, 2 to 1 "T" and adapters and a pair of girling calipers off a volvo 244 wagon with vented discs.
Everything went well, bolted up fine until i fitted the pads, they sit 4 or 5mm above the disc. So my question is are the gtv6 and gtv 4 spindle the same or have i got my hands on the wrong type of girling caliper? The car brakes well but this can't be right can it? I weighed original vs new parts too wrote down somewhere for general info will post
Thanks MattImage

Hey Matt,

You need the discs from an ES30 (the SZ). These are 184mm x 24mm and will fit correctly with your girling calipers. Get ready, because those disks are expensive.........

Those SZ discs are expensive, that's right, and have 5 stud holes on them. You can try cheaper 284x22mm ones with 4x98mm holes from an Alfa 145 or 146 2.0 Twin Spark. You would need to do some adaptation, just check it out this diagrams:

thanks guys
ok this will hurt....... how much is an SZ disc? I don't know if you can get the 145/146 discs in aus as that model was n't sold here (147 yes, same disc?) plus machining the disc centre to suit gtv hub bit too difficult for me
I m confused as i'm thought volvo girling caliper was bolt on upgrade for gtv6 with no disc mods

The 147 2.0 TS and 1.9 JTD front discs are also 284x22mm, but they have 5 stud holes. :(

You have to consider the overall height. That's what makes it hard to fine the correct disc. The dimension of the SZ disc is 284x24x51,5. I had to use a 1mm spacer for the caliper to get the caliper to center on the disc, so have a look at discs with an overall height between 50,5mm and 52,5mm. Happy hunting!
