Yeah could be contacts in the stalk assembly on your steering column or shagged contacts inside the wiper motor. I would start at the steering stalk assembly first. They do go intermittent.

How many speeds do the wipers go?

Mine only go continuously slow or fast so I might be in the same boad as x-rad.

Three : Intermittent, slow,fast.

BTW: Fiats about the same vintage use the same wiper motors if you get stuck locating a replacement. Mine is using one out of a Fiat 128.

Should be three speeds...intermittent, slow, and fast. I used to have only 2 speeds until my fiancee broke the stalk on my unit and I replaced it. Now it has three.
