Tach stopping at 4800 RPM?

Post by tcl »

My tach seems to be stopping at 4800rpm even though the engine is reving past that point (as evident by the sound and speed increase). I'm wondering if this is a function of the cold weather or whether I need to have the tach sent out for repair. Any ideas?

Is the needle bent and hitting the gage face?

I have that problem with my speedo.

I don't think so. It seemed to work fine up until about a week ago. I think I'll swap it with an old spare that I have to determine whether it's the tach or something feeding it the signal. That's assuming the old spare works.

You might (if not already) try fiddling with the connectors before putting in the spare.

You solve this?
You know my 83 used to do this exact thing and it really was that the plastic needle was rubbing the gauge face - even though the needle didn't look bent.

If you live in a hot climate, you got a bent needle.

I'm waiting until the weather warms up a bit before I swap out the tach with a spare I have. Then I'll open it up and take a look at the needle. It may be bent since sometimes it seems to stop in a slightly different spot even though the sound and speedometer indicates the revs are still rising.
