75/Milano instruments removal

Post by MD »

Hey Guys. Need some help.
I need to work on the instrument cluster of a 75/Milano but cannot figure out how to take it out of the dashboard.

Got as far as the photo but pretty much bogged down after that.

If anyone knows the procedure or can cut and paste one from a manual, I would appreciate it.

What's the problem? As usual it's a speedo pointer going along for a joyride and pointing at any speed it feels like form moment to moment. The only time it points correctly is with the ignition off !!! :D

LHD #@$%*&#!!
I've taken mine out several times but for this I'd need a mirror!
Remove ashtray, remove two screws behind it holding the drawer base, and pull out AR control far enough to remove two main connector plugs. Remove any (2-3) screws holding plated supports to chassis. Remove two similar screws from behind coin holder. Pry loose the two side switch 'pods' (alarm, fog, etc) and unplug connectors, pushing them back through the square holes they emerge from (note which goes where!!). Peep down through the top right square hole and remove the screw you see, finally pulling it out with a magnet rod. Remove the strip nxt to the cig.lighter and undo the 2 screws behind it. You should now be able to wiggle the instrument panel loose, but don't pull it out yet. Tilt it towards the steering wheel enough so that you can unplug the two instrument cluster connectors and the ground pin. You're set to pull the monster out now!
I'm writing this all from memory, assuming RHD/LHD assembly is the same!!
The instruments themselves are held on to the frame with 5 screws, 3 top, 2 bottom. From then on you can work on anything regarding gauges, speedo/tach.

Thank you VERY much guys.

Looked up all the links and read through Ben Hurr's novel too (hahaa).(Now's the time to thank your dad for paying you to go to typing school Jim) :D

I got a much better idea now. As I understand it, (more or less) the instrument cluster housing comes away from the main dashboard. After that its a case of removing the instrument cluster itself from this modular piece?

I was originally thinking it would simply pull forward like the earlier Alfetta binnacles but such is not the case !

Anyhow, I'll have another crack at it at first opportunity.

Thanks. Just to clarify a bit further. Would that be a 2litre or from a V6?

That meter is most likely from an early 4-cyl. My car was built in '86 and has those type of markings in both km/h and mph.

Well MD, while you're at it, if your car has the crazy led feature for the Alfa Control panel, don't forget to fix that. Cheap $1.00 fix. Stuff you can get locally or jaycar. I'll be ripping out the heater console this week.

Being Australia it will only have come from a V6. Most likely a 2.5.

Because we only got the later model Twinsparks here, they were all in the Series 2 instrumentation, so the speedo read up to 280km/h.

Is it any wonder that it is so difficult to make sense of these production decisions. One minute it is suggested that the car can reach 220 and later perhaps 260 with exactly the same engine but wait, it can even reach higher speeds of potentially 280 with an engine that makes less horsepower.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story I say..

Thanks Rookie

Zamani, thanks for the tip. My problem is not that they done work, the f**kers are glowing all over the place like at the side show alley. The fix was relatively easy-just yank the connectors apart :D :D

You know when you are fireman and your ass gets on fire- you think things couldn't get worse? Well guess again. The wife's 75 speedo just decided to go on strike and its refusing to display zip, nix, zero. :!:
Now it's my ass that's on fire until I fix it.

Please check out my parts wanted ad if you can help.

Cheers

Do you have a pic of the 280Km/h speedo?
