Re: Alternative gearbox for 2.5 or 3.0
hmmm.... I didn't realize the 928 and 944 gearboxes are totally different.
I looked at this years ago and it's clear a 924/944 gearbox doesn't fit being behind the rear axle where the DeDion is.
But from this photo I see the 928 box is in front of the axle making it suitable to some odd project. It should cope with some serious power and torque as well.

Hell no..., better get yourself a Getrag 265 then. That is way stronger and shifts better also.
The bellhousing is the problem in most cases. For the Opel kadett from a friend of mine we made this:
it's an Audi S2 5 cyl. 20v turbo engine with a Getrag 265 gearbox. Later we found out that we could have used the bellhousing of an old Volvo diesel gearbox...
Or how is this for a work of art? uses some old american gearbox.

Real piece of art!
Hm, I saw just right now that Barry mentioned almost straight fit Alfa sei bell + Getrag 265. What about diff? If there's no diff from Sei, must go for diff from bmw? Someone did that conversion already?

Re: Alternative gearbox for 2.5 or 3.0
The south africans have some beemer diffs in use...
Only problem i see is that the Sei diff has a long nose on it in order to get it over the front of the triangle. the beemer diff is rather short so you would have to take your propshaft over the triangle.
The Audi RS2/S2 Quattro rear diff also has a long nose and is a nice compact unit. maybe that would be easier to fit?
barry could shed some light on this probably but he hasn't been posting for quite a while now...
P.s. i might have a Sei bellhousing for you... no promises however.

I'm still just diging, collecting data and prices... Tried to find Getrag 265 over here and it's almost rare (drift boys started collecting them few years ago).
Meanwhile I'll start with rebuild of Transaxle 4.3 ratio, togeather with lightweighting etc.

is the Alfa v6 set up for front clutch? will the thrust washers handle the force? I don;t think they are designed for excess forward push on the crankshaft....
Re: Alternative gearbox for 2.5 or 3.0
They are used on the 164 and late 916 GTV with front wheel drive whith front clutch setup, so I guess they are up to the job.xrad wrote:is the Alfa v6 set up for front clutch? will the thrust washers handle the force? I don;t think they are designed for excess forward push on the crankshaft....

the Alfa v6 was first used in the Sei which had a front mounted ZF gearbox... Later on it was used in the GTV6.
