Alfa v6 tappets

Post by 75evo »

Guys,

The exhaust tappet now cost USD50!!!! Crazy! The intakes are more "reasonable" at USD29 each.

What is the alternative to this? Remachine and reharden?

When swapping to new cams I was told to only use new tappets but with the new price, cams are cheaper then tappets. You should be worried not to spoil the tappets, screw the cams!!!

A couple of years ago I had mine re-faced at the local camshaft grinder. Before I did it I talked to the local Alfa tuner and he said he had taken a lot off a set to lighten them (from memory I think over 1mm) and then had them hardness tested and they were just as hard as at the surface.

Hey, I was trying to load a foto from photobucket for this topic and it's been awhile so I'm rusty on this. Any help as this is a good one for this topic and here's why.

A few years ago I just got PO'd about the intake valve adjustment method ---- aka WORK involved. Then I fingered out that my '84 Euro BMW M635CSi's M88/3 valve buckets looked fairly close so I miced (sp?) them and sure enough the diameter's are the same and the stock GTV6 ones are only about 1mm taller. This appeared to not to be an issue. All other dimensions checked out for parts interchange.

Swapping to these buckets allows you to change the shim on the top in lieu of underneath (shims are from a VW of the same era). Then with a little grinding adjacent to the cam cap, you can use the BMW valve adjusting tool to simply depress the bucket with the cam in situ and blow out the old shim and replace with the correct replacement thickness shim and that's it. I have the adjustment tool and a buttload of shims on hand. You cannot use the later S38 B35 motor stuff as the diameter changed to 33mm.

No more of this shat:

First Remuvva da motore,
Next Remuvva da wallet,
Next drinks alot of vino,
Next stompa da watch whilst inibriated as there's too much time invulvaed!!

I'm getting ready to do this on my motor fairly soon I hope.
