My GTV 2.0l 's story...

Post by gatouille »

I bought this GTV in 2008, it was already prepared for trackdays use, lighter, race seat, roll bar (old one)...

First I try to use the genuine motor 2 liter carbs, but it didn't want me unfortunately
I broke it 2 times before using on track !
I decided to divorce
A guy on internet french alfa board proposed to borrow a good motor (also a ALfetta 2 l carbs) !!!
It was amzing, he didn't know me but he wanted to help me, just because he liked my story
Thank you Gtvpp !

So I use this motor on my very first trackday !

Something shaw that i'm a rookie (of the year   )

Another meber of french board fan of alfa gave me a twin spark motor !

Do you want me to continue this fantastic story " the bearth of a great champion"

Thank you Kevin and Hexen,
So I use only one time the motor Alfetta 2.0 L carb borrowed buy my "new friend" Gtvpp.
Can you imagine a man you don't know who give you a good motor ready to use ??

Here is the motor
Image

It's of course better to carry it with an alfetta !
Image

He also teached me some pilot's leasons
Very nice with me, hope he was not gay and wished "something" with me

Thank you Philippe
Image

Just after I had mounted this motor, another guy sent me a email and told he wanted to give me a 2 liter Twin spark
So it was time to change the philippe's motor, I only used it one time !
Image

And now it was time for twin spark conversion !

Image

Image

When you find things are too hard for you, in France we said :
I'm a chicken which has find a knife !!!
I felt like this
Image

Dirty, uggly but for free, of course I felt in love with my first Twin Spark

Image

Only 170 000 km
time to clean a little
Image

Weight is 110,5 kilos

Image

Yessssssssss!

Image

Image

I tried to make the electric network for motor Twin spark lighter, then it refused to start  So I had to find another one

Finaly it worked and it was ttime to go to Dijon's track very nice one !
Of course with 2 alfetta it was better ! (march 2010)

I will continue tomorrow thank you

I used this Twin spark for few trackdays, it's was a good motor, unfortunately the driver(me I guess  ) was very stupid.
In Dijon 2010 I used it as a real race motor and too much revs meant :
Image

A valve's spring or the valve told me it was fed up with mad driver !

Please stop crying Gatouille, you have 2 other Twin spark motors in your garage !
Image

So...
Image

Does anybody need spare parts for Twin Spark ?
Image

Of course everything was out of order, liner piston head motor's housing...
Too bad because this motor was realy a good one.
It's time to stop to be a "chicken brained driver" !

As I had two motors in the garage, I was very confident
(too confident?)
Here is the "new" one, I took it on a 75 TS wreck with 200 000 km (like brand new!)

Once again, My very first alfetta motor didn't want me so I changed it with another alfetta (borrowed by Gtvpp) then I changed it by a Twin Spark,
Here is the 4th motor in only 2 years....
It's little bit crazy, isn't it ?
Image

My 2 alfetta on french TV !
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcwvw4_direct8

I spent a lot of weeks on his "new" twin spark, but it refused to work , that made me learn mechanic's job
I was so fed up, cylinder 3 had 0 compression, I decided to CHANGE the motor
Image
Once again ! Remeber I had a second Twin Spark in an half wreck of 75 TS
Look I'm ready for trackday !

So :
Image

Bye !
Image

You must realize that your next soda can may have "twin spark inside" !!
Image

Always the same story !
Image

I never use it  because I found an advertissement on internet about a lot of brand new genuine spare parts from alfa, a entire motor in fact.
I called and i bought :P
I payed 900 euros for all of these parts (alla were brand new genuine alfa parts)
Pistons rings liners, Camshafts, valves, guides, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, water pump, timing chain, timing pinions, "vanos" .....
And a exhaust manifold CSC
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I also bought a "real" fuel tank for 50 euros.
Image

Then I stopped to waste time with too old motors, and I did a "dream" :
Making my own motor with nice parts, of course they were only "standard", not for race.
But I thought it was a good way to learn job before doienf things more difficult.

Try ti improve motor, brakes, or suspensions is nice but don't forgot the "pilot" i mean the driver of course !
Near my home there is a track (Charade) which was a formua one track many many years ago.
There is a school for "pilot teachers"
If you plan to become such a teacher you have to pass exams at this special school.
Hte school is looking for "students", so you can go and have leasons for free, just because you help the school to make his job !

Of course I did it

Too bad, my teacher's name was Deborah ! A very nice girl
Image

Image

ALso off road
Image

I learned how to use brakes, gear level, and many things.
I felt later that I have made progress.

It was time to be more serious, and I started to rebuilt a entire brand new motor Twin Spark !
Image

Image

It was so nice to work with clean spare parts brand new !
Image

The vanos is brand new to
Image

Checking the clearance of the "vanos" (thank you ZP)
Image

The genuine plenum (intake manifold)
Image

When modified to be shorter
Image

For adjusting fuel pressure
Image

It's time to glassblast !
Image

Image

Image

Image

Of course I cleaned this part
Image

Mounting guide's seals
Image

When the sound changes it time to stop to use the hammer.
Image

Few hours later, the solvant was stil there so I did a good job !
Image

Image

Image

I used this to calculate valves clearances
Image

Unfortunately, TS valves are 8 mm, other ALfanord motor are 9 mm, i didm't want to use (I don't know the name in english please help me see the photo)

Image
As I wanted only 8 mm "things I don't know the" to adjust valve clearance, I was disapointed because the alfa parts seller told me he can't sold only one or few, He only sold a complete set of these (250 euros)
So I found these parts in Ducati motos shop, valves are 8 mm and parts are exactly the as one on twin Spark.
I went to the motorcycle's shop with this :
Image

The mecanic sold me 4 or 5 "things that I don't know the english word"
Of course it was less expensive than buying a complete set from alfa

"Timing's time" ?
Image

Brand new oil pump, when mounting screws always turn it to prevent pump seizing or breaking axle near this (it's easier to have a other person who help you)
Image

I must say that my very first brand new motor was not so bad

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

164 Twin Spark's one is a little shorter than 75 TS 's one

I forgot to talk about a "tip", when adjusting valves clearance, you can mix these parts beacause they are littl bit diffenrent size (thickness I mean)
I found one with 310 and one with 323 so it's 0,13 mm different that can help.
That helped me to be very precise (clearance good with 0,02)

Time to try !

I did 6 km (about 4 miles I guess) and the motor stopped !!
I was very disapointed, because all of this job, and these brand new parts...
Image

I was unlucky because the brand new vanos (i've other english words but I think they are forbiden on this board! ) had a trouble and "unscrew" with the camshaft !
Image

But I was very very lucky, because pistons didn't meet valves !!

I thought it was time to buy a loto's ticket !

Checking valves and pistons...

Please wait your turn sir !

Image

My motor worked, see the standard intake manifold as I wated to have a job more simple.

Image

The spark plug had a nice color, and more than 10 km without breaking something, it was amazing, wasn't it ?

Image

Pilot leasons again !(for free of course)

Image

Dijon 2011(march) very early in the morning I waked up my 3 alfetta
Image

it was my first trackday after breaking the motor (10 month ago) :
Track is magny Cours
Image

Of course it didn't want to start  batteries hates being wihtout working a while....
Image

Do you think I tryed to do my best

Image

No ?
Image

Image

By night
(thank you hexen for photos)

Image

Image

Image

Let's got to track Lurcy Levy (jully 2011)

Image
Of course Hexen was there
Image

Image

I realised that I have made progress in driving, for example at Dijon I overtook many times Gtvpp
Image
he is a fast driver (one of the fasters 2 Liters non turbo trackdays)
So I was very proud because MY motor works without breaking something (who says it's a miracle?)
I met troubles with fuel pressure fuel pump gas tank, so the power was bad( less than 120 hp)
Gtvpp also had toubles and less than 120 HP and of course we overtook each other
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5NlpaHXkA

So a reliable motor a less bad driver, great !
143,1 cv not so bad with standard parts and a motor too much new, I mean bearings are too tight, as I hadn't already read JIM K 's books.
He recommanded "less tight" bearings for trackday use.
I alos had a bad exhaust from 85 1600 carb, the diameter is too little.
We can hope better.
http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/xmqjnx_g ... sance_auto

This was not a good test, not enough fresh air and little bit dangerous see how they blocked the car
And my gearbox was too cold.

This is the end with my very first new motor which is going to a Giulia for road use.

I ' m going to make a new motor with special pistons HC, catcams, glassblast standard rods or perhaps specials rods that Jim K. recommanded me.
I've a injection Sybele, of course the exhaust manifold CSC, and I'll have a hand made intake manifold, later I'd like 4 throttles from motorcycle(45 mm)

The target is 185 190 hp reliable (revs limited at 7000)

I will tell you, but first I have to finish my V6 2,5 engine see my introcing
Thank you for your read !

The car when I bought it in 2008
Image

The weight was about 950 kilos, (genune car is 1110 kilos), my car was already prepared for trackday use by the previous owner.

As I had no much money to spend, and I was a bad mechanic
I took the easy way : Weight killer !!

First a very little battery -4 kilos

Image

Bye bye these uggly polyester parts (-5kilos)

Image

A lighter "crutch"
First model too heavy

- 400 grams
Image

Please don't tell my wife I use her very precise :
Image
I love you darling

Little steel body parts not usefull - 500 grams

1,655 kilos flywheel + 1,27 kilos (puley) = -2,925 kilos

Image

before
Image
After
Image

I didn't know that I had to balanced the 3 parts (Flywheel, puley and crankshaft)
I will do on my next motor of course

Many litte parts non usefull -1,82 kilos

Wires buttons -600 grams

etc....

I reached 902 kilos

But I wanted more (hum I mean less  )

-3,3 kilos on each door =-6,6 kilos

Image

A pair of black one was 720 gram, pair of new one (silver) 340 grams
Image

I hate weight and interior is too heat during riding so :
Image
-330 grams of macrolon glass

Am I mad ? :wall:

-1,5 kilos (previous owner had already done a part of this job:
Image
Image

THis and few parts -8 kilos !
Image

Few parts 1,2 kilos

Speedometer -520 grams
Watch -200 grams
Part on the dashboard (visor?) -1,6 kilos

Dashboard -6 kilos
Image

-1,07 kilos
Image

-0,47 kilos

Manual choke -260 grams
Image

Heating system -4,25 kilos

New steering wheel -0,89 kilo

Wires - 0,6 kilo (600 grams)

Standard exhaust manifolds 13 kilos
Image

From CSC it's only 8 kilos which means -5kilos !
Brand new one found on internet 150 euros, no a bad deal.
Image

Alternator from Citroên 2CV 30A -2 kilos

Even when I was ill I hunted weight, I had a pneumonia, very bad one
-5 kilos for the driver !!

These parts, from a Alfetta is 1 kilos more than parts from a twin spark or 75 turbo, it's easy to see which one is lighter, the one with less "wings"
Good news lighter are coller for your oil !
