Re: Cutting Out Gremlin Caught and Crushed!

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to post a reply & thank you. My GTV6 started exhibiting an occasional hiccup. So brief I couldn't tell if the tach was dying first (likely ignition fault) or the hiccup was first (likely fuel fault). Yesterday it hiccuped then a few miles later it died. ...

Re: Headlight conversion from Hiperformance store

I bought the wiring/relay kit (but not new headlights). The components are good quality, the instructions are clear. I wasted a bit of time trying to snake the wiring from behind the left side headlights to the right side headlights. I guess in theory it can be done without removing the grill but in...

Re: Blue Smoke @ High RPM

Generally blue smoke on acceleration is from the rings, on decelleration is from the valve stems/seals. A leak down test can help check the ability of the rings to seal. It is more informative then a compression test. (But a compression test is usually easier to perform.) Adding about 20-30 ml of en...

Re: worn cam, clatter

So, still trying for a diagnosis, I dropped the lower half of the sump (again) and removed the oil pump to get a look at the #1 & #4 rod bearings.

It appears I found a problem. I am hoping it is the problem.

Re: worn cam, clatter

I found a photo in the 164 section of the AlfaBB. This photo shows what the big end bearing shells looks like - very similar to what I saw in our GTV6.

Still doesn't explain the noise I am hearing...

Re: worn cam, clatter

How wide should the conecting rod's big end bearing shells be in relation to the rod itself? I am still working on locating the clattery noise I don't like from the engine of our GTV6. I was hopeful replacing the worn camshaft (and the tappets) would solve the issue. It is better. The constant clatt...

Re: worn cam, clatter

really looks like lack of oil to that area..but why. were the camshaft bearings at caps OK? Cam bearings all looked fine. What leads you to believe that there is a lack of oil? When I watched the area with the engine running (at idle with cam cover off) there was a steady flow of oil bathing the ca...

Re: worn cam, clatter

Oil pressure via dash gauge (new sender) is good. With a warm engine about 20 psi at idle, 65-70 psi running (~ 2,000 rpm & above).

Re: worn cam, clatter

Here's a question - does anyone have a photo of the underside of the different 12V V6 cam covers? This engine has the finned/block letter covers. But I believe that originally it would have had the smooth/script covers. My searches indicate the covers are considered interchangeable. But I'm just won...

Re: worn cam, clatter

Thought I'd add this bit of info. Using some advice from Alfisto Steve on the AlfaBB , I made a camshaft pulley removal tool from a plumbing pipe flange. I used a flange for 1/2" pipe. By happenstance the center bolt from my pittman arm remover fit the threads in the pipe flange. I drilled two ...

Re: worn cam, clatter

Right, V6 12 valve engine has one cam/head. It has both intake & exhaust lobes. The intakes act directly via shim under bucket. The exhausts have a short push rod to a rocker arm with screw adjuster.

Also, duration (open -> close time) may be different.

Re: worn cam, clatter

(GTV-racer - I don't know the specs you seek. Are these numbers not available from camshaft vendors? Typically they'll at least list maximum lift. Measure the lobe height and subtract the base circle diameter to get the intake lift measurement. The exhaust is slightly different as you have take the ...

Re: worn cam, clatter

turn the oil pump with a drill motor chucked up to the dist. shaft. Can one do it that way with the Alfa V6? What does the surface of the cam followers look like? All the cam followers of the obviously worn lobes look bad - pitted. The unworn/less worn lobes have cam followers that look good - smoo...

Re: worn cam, clatter

there is a cam position where you can turn the engine and not touch a valve, if you crank by hand...maybe then you can find the safety spot BEFORE electric cranking Yes, but I was hoping to leave both the right cam in place and the timing belt. Thus if I were to crank the engine the timing belt wil...

Re: worn cam, clatter

I removed the left side camshaft for a closer look. It is obvious more lobes are worn (perhaps all of them?). The bearings look good. I am still concerned about whether the cam is getting an adequate oil supply. If I can attribute this to the PO using the 'wrong' type of oil (inadequate zinc) then I...
