Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

Importantly, between each step, you must rinse the parts in CLEAN water very well! After plating, I dip the items into a Yellow Passivate, which has a chemical reaction with the Zinc and creates an even more anti-corrosive finish that also has a translucent gold colour. 13.JPG Some examples of finis...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

On sandblasting is complete, you have to tie EACH small piece onto copper wire, this will be used to suspend the items in the plating tank. Next step is to dip in a pickling solution. I have been using diluted (5%) Hydrochloric acid. This chemically cleans the parts before plating. Do not leave in f...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

CLEANING THE PARTS All the pars were taken down to their smallest components and then cleaned. I have a sandblasting cabinet and for the most time have been using aluminium Oxide "powder" to do the cleaning. It lasts and can be re-used, and is non-toxic. Here are some items before and afte...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

ELECTROPLATING Early on in the project, I made the decision to set myself up to do my own electroplating. Bought a kit from Tshwane Plating (Dean Boniface). This is a very time-consuming but satisfying process. I struggled with getting it right at times, and had to redo some items. The process: The ...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

I was very fortunate to have a double garage available to work on the car, as well as a room at the back of the garage (also 36m2) that could be used to layout all the interior parts as I stripped them. Tried to keep everything in the correct place for future ease of reference. Room started nice and...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

Some more general pics of car being stripped.
Note the kiddies lap belt system that had been installed. Will have to have those holes welded up when the car is sent in for painting.

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

You will note on the wiring harness that every connection point was labelled for future reference, rather a mission, and I am sure I will probably not understand half of what I had annotated when I re-assemble!!

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

STRIPPING THE CAR Before I stripped the car I tested all the electrics to make sure everything was working. Have to say that there were numerous alterations on the wiring harnesses, mainly relays for the electric windows, and others for the front lights and radiator fan to take the load off the igni...

Re: South Africa - 1982 GTV6 2.5 Restoration (50/100)

AND NOW FOR THE INSIDE Stunning high quality car seat covers... (not). First sign of the fact that this was #50/100 in RSA - the headrest and seats are cloth material ALL around, and not just front facing. I came to learn this later in my investigations. IMG_1424.JPG Usual dashboard cracks - I would...
