Re: LCA bolt failure?

75, Don't get too excited about using stainless on something like this. Welding stainless and carbon steel together can be done using the right electrode, but it isn't all that strong and takes a fair bit of heat to accomplish....difficult to do on stamped sheet metal. JK, If that "U" is w...

Re: LCA bolt failure?

To get the stiffness out of your existing brace weld a length (from one frame rail to the other) of 1/4 x1/4 x 3/32" angle iron to the bottom of your flat bar. Stitch weld both ends of the "L" to the flat bar with the corner of the "L" pointing towards the ground. This shoul...

Re: LCA bolt failure?

Kevin is right on the fine thread pitch for this. You can put more torque on a fine thread fastener than you can a coarse thread. I don't know the specific reason (thicker section under the thread, shallower ramp angle of fine thread, more contact area of fine thread, etc), but the fine pitch bolt t...

Re: Stainless steel bolts into carbs - galling ?

I always put Never-seize on the plug threads. I use the 1600deg f rated stuff from Permatex. I also use it for lug bolts/nuts, exhausts, etc.

Re: Project 2 : front mount SA GTV 3.0 - Sei diff

My other car :wall: is a bmw z3m coupe with the 240hp S52 engine and the ZF 5 speed and 3.23 diff. I want to put the 6 speed in it and the next shorter diff (3.46 ). Overall I'd get a little lower highway rpms, hopefully a bit better mileage, and more fun out of the lower gears. The change takes a c...

Re: Project 2 : front mount SA GTV 3.0 - Sei diff

Provided I'm remembering right, the 6 speed BMW box is the normal spacing with a 1:1 5th gear and about a .8 overdrive for 6th. I have the 5 speed in my (ahem) other car. The gear spacing is more even than the Alfa GTV6 box. M3 Coupe E36 Coupe Manual 4.2 1st 2.49 2nd 1.66 3rd 1.24 4th 1.00 5th - 3.8...

Re: Project 2 : front mount SA GTV 3.0 - Sei diff

Dang....even that auto trans ratio is super short with the 1:1 5th gear

The Ring trips will need even taller gears or a E46 6speed box that has an overdrive top gear. You may want the taller gears just to get there...

Re: Stainless steel bolts into carbs - galling ?

I'm sure you have a good reason for going stainless here, but why? I assume the originals are brass, strong enough, don't corrode with fuel, etc. So why stainless here?

Thanks,
Scott

Re: No fuel!

If the grounds for the injectors are loose it won't fire the injectors at all. If the injectors are not plugged in they won't work either. Spend the time to rid the car of the alarm system, then ensure that all the connections are good. read thru this and it will help: http://hiperformancestore.com/...

Re: Interesting Dry 24V Sump Project

That kind of machine will work fine on aluminum, plastic or wood. Steel is a different thing. I can't tell if the drill chuck is the only chuck or not, but they don't take side loads of milling well (they can and will let the cutter move up or down in the chuck). You'd go bonkers at how slow it woul...

Re: Interesting Dry 24V Sump Project

You can have parts overhang the end/edge of the table just as long as you can reach with the cutter. Me, being a machinist, think you'd be better off buying a cnc vertical mill, used, but of a more professional size and construction. Please remember that there is a reason that it takes 4 years to tu...

Re: Rebuilt V6 engine oil priming.

When I built my engine I put oil in it while on the stand, including the cam sumps.

I just tightened the drill chuck to the hex bolt on the aux drive cambelt pulley and spun it in the proper direction until the drill slowed down. No oil cooler tho....
