Stiff Steering

Over the last 500 miles the steering on my '84 GTV6 has stiffened up noticeably. It still gives an immediate response to turns of the wheel but the stiffness is great enough that the wheels do not self-align when driving straight (i.e., I have to turn the steering wheel back to go straight). Is this a problem with the tie-rod end links? With the steering rack? Something else? Looking under the car I noticed at tear in the rubber boot for the tie rod. Will dirt in the steering rack do this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

... it was the universal joint that connects the steering column to the steering rack. Sourced a used one in good condition...

Had the same thing happen to me in my RHD one, sound a lot easier than an overhaul!

Weirdly it seems to have cured itself. It has been sitting since July and I took it out and the steering is now fine. Maybe it was the heat?
