86 GTV-6 REAR SUSPENSION SETUP

Hello all,
I'm setting up the rear suspension on a 1986 GTV-6 (it's a custom build, more on that later is I make progress). Currently trying to determine how much room I need to leave for the stock rear suspension to move freely through the normal range of travel.

My question: Measured while the car is sitting level/static, how far does the DiDion triangle move up (like when the tires hit a bump) until it hits the rubber suspension stops?

Conversely, how much room should I allow for the triangle to move down (like after hitting a bump and the suspension rebounds)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Bump = until the chassis drags on the asphalt
Rebound = until the shocks are fully extended.

Full travel.

Thanks for the reply Mats.

There is no chassis (yet) so I was kind of looking for something like "you'll need to allow the DiDion to move up 3 inches and down 1.5 inches from static". Or something similar.

I'll have an on-board air system so I can add/remove pressure from the rear airbags at any time. And this is definitely NOT a high-performance application. I don't plan to smoke rubber or see how many 'G's I can pull running through a slalom (LOL)

Regards,

Right, for a trike application my answer would be different. I can't say I have a lot of trike experience but as a rule of thumb: for droop you would want double the bump travel. And for a comfortable ride I'd say that you want at least three inches of bump travel before hitting the bump stop. Hitting the bump stops in a corner will give you instant oversteer real quick and the same applies if you hit full rebound in a corner.
Remember that you will also lose travel in both directions in a corner due to the fact that the trike will lean over a bit.

Thanks for the reply Mats.

Now I know I'm on the right track.
