Rear cv joints and those friggin flanges on the transaxle

the rubber boots cracked on both sides of the axle half cv joints on boths gtv6's at watkins glen. of course one of those cars (the 2.8l) wont be needing cv joints because the tires at turn 11 picked a fight with the front and side of the car and the tires won. so long story short the joints spewed their black liquidy goop everywhere and now i am wondering do i order the remanufactured ones from iap or can i replace those rubber boots and regrease the things.... or should i just leave them alone. do i have to worry about them overheating now? has this happened to anyone else? it was so strange that they broke on both cars at the same event. i have recently had the transmissions out and i noticed that they have different sized flanges attached to the brake rotors.... what gives?

Try new rubber boots and regreasing. I did it on mine.

If you are talking about the CV boots, then they wear out, dry out, and crack, and is an item to replace. Try prevent the joint itself from coming apart as it can be tedious to get back together... If it does come apart (the balls fall out), then at least you get a good opportunity to inspect the balls for wear.

It's messy, it's greasy, but not difficult to clean, repack with with grease and replace the boots. They are probably the originals, so replace them and worry about them in another 20 years time.

I had to replace a cv a couple of months ago.
The job was easy, finding the part wasn't.
The cv shop did not have a reference for the GTV6 but found one that was for a Porsche 911 that was an exact match.

great... this sounds even more fun then replacing the driveshaft donuts. i really envy the guys who show up at the track with a set of tires, a tire iron, a chair, and a cooler. its always something!!

so how about those spacing flanges? anybody else notice that they vary in size?

Alfa GTV6 NZ,
do you remember the exact model of the 911 car the new CV joint came from?

Sorry, cant remember, but the cv shop should be able to match the number of splines and diameter and depth measurements to get the exact one.

May be able to find the receipt somewhere.

Will see what i can do.

****UPDATE****

I have now found the invoice.
The details were as follows for anyone that needs them.

Part Number - CV430228-40 (not sure if this means anything)
Description - 28/108X40mm Porsche 911

So that is 28 splines and is 108mm in diameter and 40mm thick.

Hope this helps anyone out there. Also the model of 911 maybe 85 or 86 onwards.

Karl

BTW. I paid NZ$160 (US$110) for one RRPNZ$280 (US$195), you have got to love trade discount!!
