Deformed, bent? member/rail

Post by PietereQ »

Since I had some time recently to check up on my racer, I noticed something that keeps me bothered now.
Take a look at the front members. I think that right one (lower pic) is bent/deformed a little. Seems to me like the front right wheel had a "close contatct" with either huge pothole or a curb. Looks like front LCA bolt got pulled outwards whereas rear LCA bolt got pushed inwards the car. I have inspected that member and there are no cracks or whatsoever. Question is: live with it and deal with it via lca camber shims or take the car to the shop for re - alignment?

Front Right Beam. Note the difference between the "height" of bolts and nuts. The rear one is deffinately higher. Also the bolts themselve aren't pararell

I would probably shim it.

Peter,

There is a lot of corrosion to cars in your part of the planet as we all know. Have you checked that the rail internals are not corroded so the section has become weak?
If it is sound, I would inject an anti corrosion paint inside the rails now to prevent it from future rust.

As for the actaul problem, have a wheel alignment check done on it and if it isn't too way out, simply shim it. Also examine the crush tubes inside the rails to be sure they are secure and doing their job so that the bolts aren't actually crushing the rails themselves.

Thanks for replies. That got me reassured. Shim it then.

MD all members are healthy inside out, and recently preserved with that special waxlike substance for closed profiles.
See you got bored with didgeridoo man. :D
