Having some problems determining whether a PM has been sent.
A recent PM is sitting in the OUTBOX after hitting the Send Reply button and the item is desribed as having been sent at a specific time and date. However a look in the Sent Items fails to show it suggesting that it has not been sent and that's after some 12 hours apart. All very confusing.

I think it depends on wheter it's been read or not. Not sure though.

Right - items remain in the outbox until the recipient opens the mail.
