Coil on plug alternative to the Bosch part

Hi:
The standard Alfa 164LS Bosch COP units cost at least $100 each so I am wondering if I can find an alternative to use on my 164LS engine, fitted with Megasquirt-II PCB V3.57 running MS2/Extra firmware.

These coil packs are used on various VW engines (root part number is 06b905115) and cost $30. So I want something similar, but without the onboard driver/ignitor (I just want to use the 'dumb' coil packs). This is because my Megasquirt has been set up with Bosch BIP373 Coil Drivers specifically for coil packs without an onboard driver.
Any ideas?

The coils used on the BMW M50 ( the line5 24v engine from the E36/E34 series cars) engines are quite similar looking to the 164 ones
... But how similar the really are i can't say...
But since they come stamped with "BMW" on them they probably are 200$+ each.

Are they a dumb coil? or do they have an ignitor built in?

06B 905 115 COPs have a built in ignitor - check this out:

When I move to MS3, I will go this route for sure.
But my MS2 seems to be working nicely. I'll add a write up here soon.

So you could do like the BMW blokes and run a bunch of transformer type coils and leads on an otherwise stock motronic setup?

I dunno mate, can you post some links?
I saw a link on the VEMS page which seems to state the 540i coils are passive....that's what we need right?

Like so - seen it done on more than one occasion - and on stock engine management (the pictured car is clearly not stock)

I'm using 155 V6 coild when I put in my Autronic CD500R. Dumb coil. But maybe Mike wants the COP look.

Why not Audi COPs instead? fully documented in MS.

Apparently some E46 coils are just a transformer, no ignitor.

I dunno about MSII, does it have a built in ignitor or not. As far as I know the VAG COPs have ignitors and fail a lot.

You can build Megasquirt to use either a COP with a built in ignitor, or one without (like the stock 164LS coils). I prefer the idea of using ones with built in ignitors because all you need the MS to provide is a low current trigger (less electrical noise near the ECU).
