82 Alfa Restore

Post by cchan »

Back working on the Alfa this week with the return of JJ. We had couple of new issues pop up with the starter but took care of it. Moving Forward to get the Alfa started this week ( We hope) and we did alot of stuff. Tires have been changed, new fuel pump and filter, clutch slave and sytem online, new starter heat shield, rear brake lines replaced and sorted, and lot of small miscellaneous items to prepare the car to run.
Here are some pictures of the new parts:

We needed to get the old front seat back so that we can drive the Alfa to the Dyno shop and alignment shop. I went to see the status of my new seats and things are moving right along, The head rests were done and all the seat parts were cut out. The red leather is going to be used for the piping. Once the Alfa is running this I will need to bring the Alfa here to have everything installed and detailed. Here are some pictures of this.

We also were able to secure the new badges for the Alfa. We were originally going to put these on last after I finished the mechancial and interior items. Once this was done we are doing to do the final detailing to get the Alfa Showroom condition but we could wait. Here are the new badges that we put on.

Nice leather...

Post by rhodes1 »

...now we're talking...red pips that is going to be an exquisite finish. I love everything you've done but I had those stickers on my Alfa when I bought it and they, in my humble opinion, cheapen what is an absolutely top notch, top notch restoration you have done. There are very nice Alfa racing triangles made of enamel with the green clover in the centre that have just that much more aire of sophistication. Just my personal tastes, so take it for what it is worth (which according to my wife isn't terribly much).

Meet you on the 17 mile loop in Carmel at 7 am, Glenwood against Callaway, sounds fun, huh?

Great work, as always,

Richard.

Were almost there :D

We determined that the starting problem was a defective solenoid and now the Alfa cranks right up. The new brake system has been completed and clears the valve cover. We made new pins to hold the peddles in since the old one was worn.

Of Course the only reason why we did this is because the original brake booster did not clear the valve cover. Here is the new system with no problem on the clearance.

Finally we were going to install the 164 Alternator and we made a bracket but we gave up since the 164 Alternator did not fit like we hoped. So we went back to my old 2.5L Alternator and modified the brackets. It fit perfect and once we determine that it is sorted properly I will detail the brackets and get a rebuilt one that looks cleaner. Here are the pictures

Well, today was a good day. We put back on the headers and cut off the 164 motor mount so the engine looks original and mounted the coil packs:

We ran into no oil pressure when we first started it up but found out that it was the Oil pressure sender was not working. We purchased a new one for a 164LS. We were going to take apart the oil pump, etc. Luckly we decided to change it to the old 2.5L oil pressure sender before we went this way and we had pressure. We were wondering if the 164LS is defective or just does not work with the GTV6 oil gauge. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

The Alfa Started right up on the second crank. We needed to put on the O2 sensor and close the extra bung since the exhaust was leaking from there. Once we did this the Alfa was running well and sounds like a racing car. Lucky I put on the cats and 2 mufflers since it is alot louder than stock. We will need to pull out the plen, air filer, valve cover to put in the vacuum lines and other misc electrical controls before we permantly mount everything.

This is where we stopped but we are there with the 24V running strong and a little more sorting and the Alfa will be driven to the alignment shop, dyno, and the interior shop. I can not belive that were almost done :D

Here are the last of our progress pictues:
