M8,

you will be beating Fezzas. Check out the vids section of the 3.8 gtv6. He was a wee bit slower then the 430GT.

After much fluffing about, I may finally have someone who isn't all talk and actually wants to take the build on.
Once the process has begun, I'll have some photos to show, for sure.

Ok boys, been a bit slack, but I’ll fill you all in here.

After having a good experience with Hugh G in Sydney, he ended up with more work than he could handle and decided to concentrate on race cars only- Porsches, radicals and a few GTA GTV6 race cars.

Car ended up at a place in western Sydney,
Let’s just Call him John M, and if anyone in Sydney thinks they are dealing with this guy, I encourage you to contact me and discuss your situation.
Impressive setup. Ferraris, Lambos, Mk1 escort turbo, big block Ford Eleanors, Alfas. Fiats.
This guy starts with telling me has always wanted to put a Maserati transaxle into an Alfetta. We discuss clutch issues (use standard FWD stuff to move it to the front) and he says that all the brackets, rocker arms and bits that hang off the side of the Maser box are available- all the manual bits- I don’t want a paddle shift...
I buy the box.
It turns out that nothing is available.
Then the next round of bull crap starts and involves going in to business with a CNC machine.
I decide not to proceed but stupidly, I lend him some money.
He talks as though he knows what he is doing, but is a walking disaster area.
Assembled a Maser Merak V6 180deg our of phase and didn’t turn the engine over by hand. Just hooked the starter up and bent every valve and holed every piston.
I also transfer him money for an AHM throttle setup. He is going to buy two apparently. I never see the throttles.
18 months later and a whole bunch of bullshit, I go and get my car and parts out of there, then move to Melbourne with my girlfriend.
Still no money out of him, but the court process is underway.
If you think you may be dealing with this guy, I urge you to contact me.
That’s the negative post and I’ll write positive ones from now on!

Sounds to me like it's time to take him for a good walk into the desert... And make sure to take a shuffle with you.

Hope it all gets resolved for you and that you at least get your money back.

Looking forward to some positive news. :D

This guy is not worth the shovel, Evo2!
I just wish he had been more honest and upfront with me and now I just want my money back from him and to be free of the whole mess so I can move on!

The car is being brought to Melbourne in a few weeks and then everything will actually begin.

I have made some friends down here who are keen to get stuck in and help me get it all going.
One is an engine builder who has done stints in Europe with F3000 and F1 teams (Williams) in the late 90s, one is a poultry farmer (yep!) that races his GTA GTV6 successfully. He has CNC machine access and designs and constructs gorgeous parts for the cars- sumps for the 24v conversion, thermostat conversion parts and headers. I’ll show some pics eventually. And another is a former mechanic that builds tube frame chassis out of chromoly for sport sedans and is a great fabricator.
Here’s the plan:

GTA 3.2 crank in 100mm bore block.
Wossner pistons.
complete seal and gasket kit from okp.
Dawie sent head gaskets with the block, although we may Re-make these out of copper.
I will likely go for some mild port work, possibly 1mm oversized valves. I want a street engine that can be tracked regularly, rather than a race engine that can be driven on the street-
Saying that, though, Dawie’s stage 1 cams appear quite mild and that would be my mistake in asking for something like that.
It’s possible we may use another set of cams- probably JK regrinds (I’ll be in touch soon, Jim!)
Cams will be computer simulated once the compression of the pistons is worked out exactly (CC the crowns).

I am pretty sure that some rods will find their way into the engine as well. It’s cheap insurance.
Looking to do a large purchase from AHM to get their throttles and some of their pulley wheels and probably their tensioner- hoping to increase efficiency by running lighter reciprocating parts where possible.
I will run a Davies Craig electric water pump as well, to remove some drag.

I have a Motec M84 to run it. I can buy a ready made loom for the 24v engine.

Driveline wise- someone is keen to buy the Maserati box off me (wants to run paddles on his transaxle car- could be very interesting) so I have found a complete Corvette driveline that I’m getting freight quotes on.
This is the g’box, torque tube and tailshaft, bellhousing, shifter box and linkages.
Hoping to have a bellhousing adaptor fabricated to marry the corvette bellhousing with the alfa block, using a stock 24v bell housing as a pattern.

I have the ultra lightweight flywheel from AHM with their twin plate clutch setup.
I’m not sure about this. It’s very very light and I don’t like the idea of running such a small diameter twin plate clutch.
This is another thing that the previous idiot recommended. We shall see if we can put it to use.
I think the flywheel will be ok, but hopefully I can run a bigger clutch than the tiny one it came with.
Pretty sure the rear floor (and probably the stock fuel tank) will need some Massaging or new sheet fabricated

Brakes - I have GTA series 2, 330mm calipers up front, with some Tarox discs and will run GTV6 front brakes as outboards on the rear with a dedicated handbrake caliper.
Think I’ll try to use a BMW master cylinder and I’ve seen somewhere on this site that a 147 booster clears the RH side valve cover. Either way, I’ll be trying to ditch the crossover bar (RH drive cars).

Body wise, Kevin, thanks for your help with the drawings a while back, but I have purchased a SA 3.0 Bonnet for the car.
The Zender kit is sold.
75 Evo front bar and GP kit to go on the car.
Zender Milano wheels sold as well and I’m likely to go with Japanese 2 or 3 piece wheels once the car is together.
Engine bay is going to be seam welded and I think we will try to attach some strengthening plates to the underside of the forward chassis rails.
This has been done by a few shops over here, with great results. Apparently the first thing everyone notices is how light the steering gets when you stiffen the front!
I would like a half cage in the rear as well.
Ive got a quick steering rack as well.
Suspension will stay how it is: RS kit, 105 castor rods, and knuckle risers.
I’ll get some RS away bars to fine tune it, and I also have my eye on some drop spindle uprights that Beninca has made.

I’ll start taking some pictures of all my bits once it’s all in one place 😊

Jules,

Do you have the block yet? If you haven finalized, I’d recommend a 3.2 instead. Reason, oem gaskets. With 11.5:1 forgives, you will get past 300 Bhp for sure.

by the way, why don’t you get the ITB from from JimK? I think it’s still up for sale and he is willing to take another set of headers as well. Pretty sure JimK will cut you a good deal compared to AHM.

Or alternatively get 10:1 forgies, drop the ITB idea and slap on a Rotrex and get 400 bhp and still maintain Oem headgaskets. Don’t forget the maxspeeding rods, Jim and I use them.

Open up the front frame rails and insert some boxsection to strenghten the nose. Make a u shaped figure and insert from the front. Use anti crush tubes where the bolts for the lower wishbones come through. The front part of the u will give you a strong mountingpoint for the antirollbar.

Love the drivetrain plans.. :D make sure to post a lot of pics..

Go look and listen at Oliver Koerfgen's engine for inspiration..

Where does the box frame close in the rear?

The race 75 TS which someone posted before had the square tubes on the lower a-arm mounts and joint at the front. But what about the rear section? I never noticed it the rear section being closed.

The transmission thing is really interesting. I would love to see a working corvette conversion with minimal to no floorpan changes....although that seems highly unlikely. If we can do that, I'll put in a 6-speed C6 box in myself.

Z, thanks for the heads up. I’ll email Jim and see what he has.
I’ve so far got two options for throttles- one is AHM and the other I want to keep to myself for the time being!

As for the box conversion, the Alfetta box is quite elongated and not very high.
A very compact thing.

In Australia, there are a few straight cut TS boxes holding together with modified GTA engines and a few turbo engines.

A straight cut gearset in a TS box with a braced clutch housing would run to around 10k AUD and you still only have 5 gears.

Both conversions I have looked at, Corvette and Maserati M138, sit taller than an Alfetta transaxle.
Both will need a front mounted clutch, but this frees up mounting the box, because it no longer needs to tilt for clutch access.
Rough measurements with a free de Dion frame and the Maser box mocked up with the driveshafts in a good spot show that the boot floor will definitely need cutting.

The corvette box looks to be a similar height and will have similar issues.

I’m expecting to have to cut around 80-100mm off the front of the transmission tunnel where it meets the firewall, to have a larger flared section welded in to clear a bigger bellhousing with a clutch in it.

I will look at having all parts made into a kit so that anyone else can take on the conversion as well.

It really is the next step in evolution for these cars and I’m excited to see how it works out

Hi SydneyJules, I'm the guy with the 147 booster mounted If you need more info, but it's not a straight swap! But with what you have planned I'm sure you're up for it.
Just a thought. The corvettes box is for all intent and purpose is just a t56 box. Although it's a 6 speed it really is just an overdrive 5 speed with an even taller extra overdrive. Have you thought much about gear ratios, tire size etc... for your project?
As much as I applaude your ideas and I'd love to see this work, I'd also love to see something uselfull for your efforts/time.
