importing automobiles to the usa

Post by Sporttunergtv6 »

hi everybody,
"hi doctor nick"... dont get it? nevermind...
does anyone have experience with importing foreign cars to the usa- particularly alfa 164 super's w/ 24v motors 8)
i finally found someone willing to go along with the export process in england and i need to act quickly. i have followed the links on the nhtsa website and i have just called the local import agent (no answer.. call back tomorrow) but i am not sure how this works. does the car have to meet dot specs? it does not currently run. can i call it an off road only race car (snickers 164 race car) can i just take everything off it that i need and them submit it for destruction?
thanks for the help,
vittorio

mats, this motors has less than 75k miles. they could drive it on two wheels, from the back seat, blindfolded for all i care! but really, does that mean that it is more difficult to import?
164 24v+fmgb+bmw lsd... see where this is headed. gearbox comes in next week.
FOCUS: importing 164 24v rhd, do i call it a race car, o what?

Why send the whole car if you only want the engine? :?

i am trying to contain costs... i have found 3l 24v motors in the uk and germany, but i have not found complete wire looms and ecu's. so i would have to gotech it and then dyno sessions... etc. i know that shipment for the car is going to prob be about $1k and the car at 500 is a steal but then i have everything... every little piece of the wire loom i could ever want. the car is in great condition, it is a shame to rip it apart but i might have no choice. 1500 or roundabouts is a go tech pro + motor and shipping. i wish these things could fit in evelopes! where is that damn shrink ray?!
