So after all that it was a wierd fault in the CDI box that the car is running, and a little bit of oil weeping into the coolant... luckily this CDI has a troubleshooting mode where you just swap a connector over and it goes back to points ignition.

Time for an Update....
CDI problem turned out to be caused by the CDI triggering off the opposite side of the points event to the Coil, combined with slightly excessive advance and a billion volts to jump to the next terminal in the cap when it came up to full advance at 3500rpm...
Cracked mag has been repaired, Dunlop front brakes are being replaced with 2l ATEs with knuckle risers and solid bushed adjustable upper arms this weekend (still on the lookout for a set of "narrow mount" uprights for the GTV6 calipers), all i need now is a little lower, and eventually a little more powah!
QLD Rego is the next step.
