GTV6 birthdays/Model years ?

I have recently looked at a number of (purportedly) 1986 GTV6s, and when I submit the VIN numbers to Alfa Romeo, they almost always come back with a "birthday" sometime in 1985 ... some quite early in 1985.

My question is: What "formally" constitutes or defines the 1986 model year? What is/are the descriminators that separate 1986 models from 1985 models?

U.S. GTV6 VIN numbers are of the form:

ZARAA669xA1000000

Z=country code (Italy)
AR=manufacturer (Alfa Romeo)
A=sport sedan
A=manual transmission
669=116.69 (US-specification GTV6)
x=check digit (0-9)
A=model year (A=1980, B=1981, etc.)
1=factory (Arese, Italy)
000000=serial number

The 10th character is a letter that defines the model year.

So your answer is E=1985, F=1986

EDIT: Ooops, I can't count E=1984, F=1985, G=1986

Mine is called an 1985 model year but it has the "F" letter and was built in November 85.

Is this letter special for the US cars?

My letter is "C", and should have been a 1982-model, but the car is produced in 28.02.1985 :?:

My VIN-number is 116C0000018253, which I thought was a pretty late production-number....

Murray: See edit above, G=1986

x-rad: Yours is a 1985.

dan6682: Where (in the world) are you located? Check the list listed in the post below to decipher your code.

By the way, Alfa can give you the best info with the chassis number (which is how they really kept records).

I came across this post somewhat randomly, but my car has VIN number ZAR116C0000018254 - the one made right after yours :0. Curiously, the documentation shows that it was manufactured a day earlier 27.02.1985., and sold in Spain (it is now in Canada with me).
