Cleaning a motor

Hey guys,
As I am taking apart the 3l I am looking forward to putting in all these new parts, however the motor is dirrrrty (oil stains, oxidation, etc.). How do you recomend I clean it?
While i have the block and head separated, and generally degreased is it safe to have it blasted with (plastic beads, or walnut shells). would i have to watch out for scoring the mating surfaces or material becoming lodged in small crevices? should i just use a scoth brite pad and some comet?
A while back i thought I could power wash a transaxle into looking like new, but that was not the case. How do they do it?!
Any help is greatly appreciated,
V
