Window shopping for a GTV6

Last weekend, I went to an SCCA solo event and there was a GTV6 there. In fact, there was a couple of them but I only saw the one going around the cone track. Seeing and hearing a GTV6 again rekindled my interest with these fantastic cars. As a new guy to this forum and coming into this completely blind, can you guys recommend a certain year GTV6? What should I be looking for or what not to look for? Any help would be most appreciated. If any of you are in the South Jersey area, I'd love to meet up with you and take a closer look at your car. Feel free to e-mail me at audijim@verizon.net.

Thanks,

Jim

Yes, Audi's! I have a few of them....

I have a 1993 S4 (for sale $8000 plus a boat load of spares/extra parts) full RS2 (400 HP) 6 speed..blah, blah, blah...a 1984 Audi 4000 s 2 door saloon (very rare in the USA), a 1983 UrQuattro, and my everyday commuter car...a 2003 VW Golf 2 door TDI (800+ miles per tank)

That's good advice, thank you. Coming into this blind, and besides the earlier GTV's have more age/miles against them, are the cars the same from 1981-1987? Does one year have enhancements that other years do not (better interiors/engine management/transmission codes/rear diff/suspension/body...ect)??? Is there a "tell all" section someone can point me to that has all this reference material?

Nice, I like the old ones (UrQuattro + RS2). Not so much the newer ones though. A friend has a beast of an UrQ, and it's just silly fast.
IMSA bottom end and everything, easily revs to 9K and takes about 2 bars of boost. Did I mention it is a beast?

Who owns the UrQuattro "Beast" you speak of? I probably know the car if I saw pictures of it.

I'm currently restoring my UrQuattro. Pics can be seen here: http://www.justfourrings.com/phpBB2/gal ... temId=4037

Thanks,

Jim

Audijim,

It's absolutely essential to get one with:

zero rust
good paint
no electrical problems (test every single switch)
no milkshake on oil cap or dipstick.
no grinding in gearbox

Desirables:
redone suspension bushings
uprated suspension
stock engine with good compression and leak down

This type of car will run you at least $8-9K. But it will be a rewarding drive for sure. Just buy and drive, no major projects before you can enjoy the car. I'm sure you must have seen people in the audi world which started out as a project and end up being sold half way. "Yeah dude, gonna get my 4000cs and a 1.8T engine with a 2.0L ABA block...." only to see such a project slip and never picked up again.

I suspect power is not a big issue as you have the short wheelbase quattro for quick sprints. So a 3.0 is not essential In fact, if you ever need a rebuild, think about a high compression 2.5 with custom regrind cams and headers. The sound will be great! Something which 3.0s do not have. Well in general people say Alfa V6s sound great, but those who have been with the V6s for a long time will know that the 2.5 V6 sounds the best.

Hey Zeefa,

Stop licking that dipstick everytime you check the oil will ya ?

Just do like everyone else and wipe it under yer armpit and you wont need to visit a shrink for a while... :D

..er ok then, I'll agree with rest..

agreed to disagree. 2.5s sound the best until you take it out and fit a 3.0l. then the 3.0l sound best of course. :D on a second note have you found a car yet?

I am still looking, so I have not found a car yet. On a bad note, I blew the trans in my TDI Golf. I have a new one coming tomorrow and an upgraded clutch/flywheel kit. Apparently (DMF) the Dual Mass Flywheels that VW put in these cars like to fail internally. I thought that's what mine did. So I pulled the trans and found a perfectly good clutch! Damn! I have a G60 flywheel and a VR6 clutch kit coming from Sachs. I'll have my TDI back on the road before the weekend. Today I had to blow the cobwebs out of the S4 and drive that pig today and until I fix the TDI. I love the power for that car! What I don't like is the way it gulps petrol! It is sooooo hard to stay out of the boost. It's just too much fun!

Along the same lines as the 2.5 sound against the 3.0, I feel the same about the Audi 10 valve 5 cylinder turbo cars. I love the ear candy that they produce! My 20 valve turbo in the S4 is nothing to complain about, but the 10 valve is what got me into Audi's and I just have a love for them. When I was at the SCCA Solo event a couple weekends ago, the GTV's that were there were the 2.5 type and I just loved the noise that they make! again, total ear candy! I have never heard a 3.0 so I can not comment on it.

Thanks for the great advice so far. Please keep it coming. I know very little about these cars, all I know is that I am very attracted to them and want to learn as much as possible.

Thanks guys,

Go test drive the nicest one you can find, even if you're not sure you want to buy it.

From then you can make a better decision on what you want.

I think you'll notice a very poor build quality, crunchy gearbox (unless it's been recently rebuilt), and one of the most responsive and fun driving experiences ever!

Yeah def right there grant- just completely sold my mate on my car- I think he realises the potential of a light(ish) rwd with a bit of pedigree, that you actually have to drive to get the most out of. Hilarious

Audijim, don't be turned off by the gearchange- you'll get better at it!
