Maldi dropped a bomb of an idea on another thread by proposing that we collaborate on creating a car for this challenge. I am all for the idea, even though I dont yet know the details of this challenge

.
I have been spoon fed a whole lot of great info on this forum and I am currently working on a bunch of homespun projects in my workshop.
I will report on progress of these when I have something to show for my effort
I got into Alfas because I have always had a thing for them. The reason I have stayed crazy is because of the community on this board. I think Alfa owners are on par with owners of any other marque in the area of backyard engineering. With the contributors present here, I am sure that we could create a very nasty machine.

Nice work Murray.
Ok, to start the process of drawing up our challenge car, I think we can start with the decision on which model car to use. I will start this discussion by talking about my own potential candidates. I am not saying that any of my cars should be used, but I think they are were top notch purchases thereby making them good baselines to begin discussing how the $2006 budget should be allocated.
I love good "deals" and I have been known to dupe myself into so called bargain Alfas. My first Alfa, which I still have, is an anthracite Verde. It was a fantastic deal-$500
The PO had been asking $3500 for it and he just got fed up with the types of people who wanted to buy it. Mostly people wanted to buy it and make GTV6 verde editions from its parts. He was planning to move and needed the car out so he practically gave the thing to me. It came with $500 worth of new spare parts in the trunk

. The body looks great, while the interior has worn recaro fabric. It would show extremely well in the Concours competition with just a few exterior touches and some new, non-original seat inserts. It came with crunchy gears and no brakes. I have repaired the brake system (wiring, no cost), and the synchros (parts came with the car).
Could my verde be made competitive on the remaining budget of roughly $1500?
A recent purchase was a beat up platinum that I purchased for a mere $200. This car might be more competitive in an auto cross than the Verde as in stock trim due to its better gearing, although I really dont know. Platinum has LSD and nonoriginal 14in wheels with nice Pilot mxh4 touring tires. It does not look cute from any angle, but it would provide an extra $300 in the budget due to its lower cost. Theoretically body work could be done by the likes of myself. I would need help with some of the damage. 2.5l engine seems like a disadvantage, but both engines are limited by their poor injectors to around 200hp.
My platinum would have a remaining budget of $1800 for modifications and repairs.

Here is an example of a competing vehicle:

Many dangerous ricers also compete. Last year's winner was an rx7. Also several honda crx. These uncharasmatic ricers are dangerous because of their cheap tuning options (big brake kit courtesey of a junk yard accord, ect).

I'll bet the sticky rubber is a must for a GRM car...
Used Hoosiers perhaps?

Dave
What do you think the fair market value of a set of used hoosiers would come to?
We need to figure out all of our accounting so we know how much we have left for optional upgrades.
We need to figure out what our bigest performance weakness is. Does our car need more improvement in power or handle. Which is the best value for autocross improvement.
I am thinking that in the engine compartment (kick panel) this project needs megasquirt. We can use ms1, but v3 board is a must if we want to be able to run stock injectors. $200
Megasquirt would gain us a nice hp gain from removal of the AFM.
Stock suspension is very soft and high in the back. I am no suspension tuner with my cars, but I know that the budget does not provide adequate room for many upgrades here. Maybe cut a coil off of the stock rear springs and lower the ride height on the torsions and add a stiffer front sway bar. $200 Or less if it could be home built or purchased used from somebody on the board

I have a line on a potential car for this challenge!
the description that I recieved is:
Milano gold
3.0l from a verde
Platinum box
Bilstein fronts, Koni rears
shankle rear springs
BMW AFM
15x7 panasport pro rallys
deleted power steering and AC
interior is rough
exterior is "not perfect, in fact it is not even nice."
Ansa muffler
I think that this car would be quite competitive out of the box. I could sell the body kit and get more money for the budget. That body kit should be worth a few hundred dollars.
I think that I might look into making challenge T shirts and the like to sell on the bb to raise money for this project.
