All my 3 cars have oil coolers...

Heaters? Why don't you park indoors instead? :wink:

Seriously, during summer we get up to around 30* so yeah, I do would use an oil cooler for hard street driving even without a turbo.

I respect everybody's opinion out there.
My post is not about changing your opinion just clarfying mine.
My opinion is this:

Factory Alfas no oil cooler required. Use appropriate oil for your locality.

Modified, oil cool according level of modification.

I have run my unmodified Alfas over a life time based on this premise in the Australian hot climate and never had an oil pressure or failure problem. Never had a bearing seize or crank score.

Did put a con rod through the side of a block once 'cause I thought Alfas were unbreakable but that's another story... :)

Geez MD i wanna hear what happened, i like these "war" stories :D
In the gtv pictured left i shattered a piston ring once and lost a chunk off an exhaust valve another time half way between Sunshine coast and Brisbane, still got 100kmhr in 4th and even over took some cars too :lol: it was hard work cause you know those drivers on the hwy you end up passing 3 or 4 times because they speed up then slow down and really piss you off well i had too slip steam behind trucks/bus's in the overtaking lane like daytona to stop this happening :lol:

I got 13 row cooler like this but wish i knew about themostat before getting oil adapter plate so i could have saved some money. Inline thermostat is extra $ and fittings :x plus the "all in one" oil adapter easy fit and looks tidy when finished :oops:

What I could recommend for every use is the Laminova Mats mentioned. Being water cooled it actually helps bringing oil to water temp.
Then it doesn't require a thermostat as it heats/cools oil towards water temp.

Only for race applications it needs a radiator good enough to handle water as well as oil cooling.

MD, Check the manual of any newer Alfa and they specify 10w-60 racing oil for "sporty drive". That to me indicates that they really wanted to put a cooler on there.

A lot of the V6 Alfas from 1992 onwards started using oil coolers. My 155 V6 has an oil cooler.

I'm moving on. If this was a racing thread I'd be glued and and be happy to talk oil coolers all day long..

So matt, you wanna hear my story...
Well it started with a Giulia Super. A friend & I got involved in my local Alfa Club rally and he was navigating for me. We were generally heading from Brisbane to Warwick via Esk and Cunningham's gap on the return leg. I didn't own the Julie too long but it was a fun machine so we drove the piss and pick handles off it wherever we could. After about two hours of the tacho living somewhere over 6 grand (never actually bothered with the tacho just changed up a gear when it ran out of puff at the top !) We hear this lound bang followed by some almighty vibration.

I pulled over and looked under the bonnet but couldn't see anything obviously wrong so I said what the heck, we are in the middle of nowhere, either this sucker is going to die closer to some town or actually get us there. Sure enough, it got us home from Warwick to Brisbane over the Gap at a gingerly pace of around 100 kph.

The next day we decided to do some investigation and found number two cylinder was not contributing anything. No vacuum, no compression. What dfk was all this about? Looking a bit closer on the block I noticed a faint hairline crack on the side of the block. I soon realised it would take more than a barber to fix this number.

Ultimately we decided to strip the motor down and found that the conrod in the number two cylinder had broken in two places sending the middle bit into the sump. The bottom section stayed around the crankshaft resulting in the terrible vibration while the upper section pushed the piston to the top the stroke and seized it up there. So that's how we got home on three cylinders. Now that's what I call Alfa tough !!

Eventually Julie was given a complete make over with a 2 litre donk and all the running gear and was essentially made up to be the equivalent of the Italian Police Special. I eventually sold it but it was heaps of fun while it lasted. My passengers liked it too 'cause it had one of the biggest "Geezus" handles in the business.

Yeah matt I was waiting for that !! :D

What it really needed was a new set of con rods when they re built the motor just before I bought it. It also should have had the "nut behind the wheel" removed and replaced by someone who understood Julies don't like to rev the tacho off the dial. :)

Found this oil cooler sandwich with thermostat on ebay, recieved it today and fits fine and you still have enough room with standard oil filter :)

but best of all its only $32 US, thats less than an inline oil cooler thermostat s i could find!!!

Don't mind me, the village idiot... without getting my hands on an oil filter to measure the threads, could someone tell me which mocal sandwich plate adaptor would fit the gtv6 2.5? Also, If I were to use this sandwich adapter would the standard size filter fit?

I'm not sure if GTV6 is same thread i think they are but confirm with someone else i'm not 100%sure

this pic might help for spacing etc (The 'cheapo' hayden thermostaic adapter) :lol:
