Good to see your latest update Seb.

You mentioned 90deg bends; the stock manifolds require a tighter bend; 80deg. Are the Glenwood headers different?

Hey I have SZ headers. US$450 from EB Spares.

Not sure if they are available now. Top notch workmanship. TIG welded too!

You can have mine for....

$1,000,000.00 (with pinky finger close to mouth)

Thanks

Dave, the headers are similar. I´m talking about the angle of the raw material of the pipe I built the down pipe from. You can see it in the second picture in my last post.

Here are some more pics of what I´ve allready done so far. I hope to get it finished up this weekend.

Ok then, finally got it done today. Well, that is, I´m 98% finished with the welding, so I could test mount everything. Seems to come out allright.

Some pics...

Seb,

Why so many welds?? Is it because you wanted to bend it a little but didn't have access to a pipe with proper angle and length?

Yup, a lot of welds it is!
Right, and I had to step it down from 2,5" at the bend, to 1 3/4" at the flex pipe/first muffler.
The bend I used was 90 degrees, what I needed was a bend somewhere between 70-80 degrees. So instead of making 1 cut and get a sharp bend, I made a few.

Seb, looks like its going well. On the subject of headers, I have made over twenty different sets. What you have done is basically what I finally ended up with. I found you cant make equal lenght headers over 42mm ID without cutting and panel beating the car a bit. There was only about 5hp difference between these two sets.(tested on my original 3.0 24v in 116 gtv). For practicality on a fun street car the unequal lenght headers are the easiest to take on and off and keeps the heat lower down in the engine bay unlike the spaghetti ones I made. On the 24v 3.0 motor I had more torque with the larger diameter(42mm id) headers at low revs than the 38mm ones.
But yes MD the unequal length headers matched to the correct cams etc give the best power at high rpm. Has anyone tried to remove one of these set out of an unmodified engine bay and still have skin left on your hands and spanners that have not been bent and ground to get to some of the bolts loose.

kevin, i dont think you realize there is a huge difference between the 24v engine and the 12v engine! yes the 24v engine requires much larger primaries, and does not care much about length, but the 12v engine is a totally different animal, the single valve does not push the same volume of exhaust as the dual valve, it wants smaller pipes more like 1 3/4", equal length primaries and keep it 3 seperate pipes for a couple of feet, the CSC headers make the best horsepower ive seen on the 12v engines an increase of about 10bhp and more torque. dont make the mistake of comparing these engines, they are not the same! you will lose torque with large primaries, not ideal for street use!

not 1 3/4" i meant 1 1/2" sorry

Yeah, you are absolutely correct. Unfortunately I have not made different size(diameter) headers for the 12v motor but I did play with the lenghts on a 38mm ID with these cars. I did find a significant increase in hp(6-9hp cant remember 12 yrs ago) on my 'spaghetti' set.
Thanks for putting this into pespective.

hey guys!

Kevin, it´s going good, but as you say I have no skin whatsoever left on my hands. A 13mm wrench had to me slayn to get the headers in place. :)

The engine i have is 164 3.0 QV (S) engine. The original 2.5 manifolds are definetly too small. The original 3.0QV are bigger but can offcourse not be fitted. This is a good option for the setup I have.

I dont think I will loose much of the low and middle register, but gain some at the top. I still have a fairly stock exhaust system on the rest of the car, but with the Ansa Sport end muffler.

I started it all up last night after finally had finished it and it sounds GREAT! I will have to wait to test drive it until the snow is gone!

Well, we´ll see. For me it will be an improvement anyhow, since I just switched from 2.5 to 3.0QV

Cheers /Seb

You wanna edit that?

Yep, definately. bit of my dyslexia coming through. Meant to say equal lenghts . You know we do everything backwards here.
