Upper cylinder cleaner? Or water mist in the carbs?

Hi guys,
I'm getting a bit of plug fouling in the twin-carb, not as bad as before, but enough to make me think it's probably built up on valve seats as well.
I know coke can be burnt off by misting water into the throttle bodies while revving a hot engine. My cousin, who's a mechanic, recommended I buy some "upper cylinder cleaner" spray to do the same job.
Anyone had experience of either? Can I hurt the carbs or the engine if I take care not to get any large drops of water into the throttle bodies?
