saw this pic on Ebay...can someone explain the benefit of this plumbing scheme at the intake?

Looks like the custom warm air intake that my car's PO engineered. It caused the car to miss terribly on hot days.

looks to me like the more mani vac, the more air bypasses the throttle plate....

A quality cone filter will generally outperform a flat panel filter. However if the cone filter is located in an area where it inhales hot air the benefit is lost or at least reduced. That installation appears to have a cheap cone filter with a location chosen for simplicity rather than performance. This set up probably provides a nice sound, but no performance gain.

If you want a cone filter, use a good one, and locate it as close to the fresh air vent as possible. This will yield a gain in performance.

Greg...it's not the filter I was looking at..it is the vacc line valving at the front right of the intake...

what do you think about it?

Now i realize that this is the stock older plumbing setup....so forget my questions...

If you are referring to the silver bit with the extra hoses it's the deceleration valve. When decelerating and the throttle closed, it lets air into the engine to supposedly allow the engine to burn any fuel still left in the intake system. These were required on all new Aussie cars in the 80's as anti-pollution equipment.
Pinch the small vac hose at the front and you should notice the engine drop back to idle quicker than with it open.
On some cars these were a PITA so we used to stuff a small ball bearing up the vac line to disable it, but it still looked like the stock anti-pollution equipment.
