head rotary seal

Post by nvenuto »

Does anyone know how they are removed and where I can get new ones. Mine are shot and need to be replaced before I put my cams back in.

"nvenuto" as your talking about cams I presume you are asking about the seals which are pressed into the front of the cylinder heads ? If so you can remove these by drilling small holes into the flat metal body of the seal (the front lip).Screw in a couple of screws and then use vise-grips to pull out the seal. You need to work your way around the seal and pull it out a little bit out at a time.New seals can be obtained from all the standard Alfa parts vendors. To install first lubricate the bore and the outer surface of the seal with light oil. Then you need to tap them back in using a flat surface eg:block of wood, and a rubber mallet.Just make sure that you drive them in slowly and evenly. Before installing the cams apply a good layer of grease to the inner surface of the seal this helps ensure that the spring stays put.Don't forget to replace the rubber O-rings that seal the drive gears to the cams.

I second Murray's advice, with one addition, go ahead and repalce the seal on the distrib/oil pump drive, it's the same seal with the same instructions...
