Ceramic coatings

Post by zambon »

Are all ceramic exhaust coatings more or less equal? How effective is ceramic coating as an insulator?

I have been considering overlaying my metal intake components with Kevlar and/or carbon fiber with epoxy resin in order to deter heating of intake air on my upcoming engine project. Would ceramic coating work better?
Ceramic coated intake runners are also an apealing thought. Would this make much of a difference other than simple rust protection on steel runners?
Also, ceramic coated rear exhaust parts seem like a good idea to me if they would stop exhaust heat from reaching the rear brakes. I wonder how much of an effect it would have?

I think SamW has a friend in that business. Anyone else know anybody who does ceramic coating?

Hi
i think ceramic coating on intake is waste of time and money!
its good for headers and pipes. first to not heat things in engine bay and second for (may be) keep T in exh gases(and speed) and helps exh flowing .... but dont know will cearmic coating of stock cast iron headers lead to cracks ... i use ttermo tape(?!@?) for header but engine is not ready yet for test :?

My guess:

Coated intake, +/-0

Coated rear, build a heatshield instead.

Manifolds, no way unless you wanna screw up the lengths, build heat sheilds...

heat sheilds are cheap and reverisible.

My two cents.

Dawie and I have been using coatings on everything from manifolds to ,well,manifolds..exhaust..intakes..everyhing where heat soak is an issue..
The results have always been good.

I had piston crowns, valve face ,combustion chamber and the exh.port caramic coated on a n/a 3.3 12v motor..Static comp=10.5:1..This bugger detonated like hell at anything close to full throttle..Did not matter what we did on fuel and ignition,it still detonated like crazy..
My conclusion,TOO MUCH heat retension in the chamber....
Changed to a std set of heads..problem solved..

Barry,
Do you know of differences in different ceramic coating products? At first I thought that this was a process similar to powder coating, but now I think it is a simpler paint process.
I still dont really KNOW anything though...

You might want to look into Nituff. It is a smooth coating like teflon, only way more resistant to scratching & chipping. http://www.techsavvy.com/industry/file/ ... se_region=*

It can handle heat up to 300C, so it should be OK on intake runners. I think it is an alu only coating.

Z,Im not that clued up on coatings..We have guys here that do the powercoat coatings from usa..Piant on and bake stuff.Same as we used on aircraft parts..
Then we have the metal spray stuff, differing alloys and ceramics..Same as Heanium Industries in usa..This is good shit..damn good..Heat penetration is like 2 or 3 thou..

Thats my knowledge Im afraid...

While were are on the subject of heat and such, check out the cracked cast iron manifold off a 2 litre Sportiva. After 2 years of being wrapped in fibeglass tape to keep it insulated, it has completely cracked right around on number 4.

I believe that apparently an insulation shroud is the go and not individual lagging to avoid the cracking problem.
