What's not to like about this project? It's just fantastic. Especially the roof opening for getting cheeseburger and fries takeaway orders at the local drivethru.

Even though MD is a splitter and abandoned us, I was having a think about TA breakages, especially as they are almost always the ring gear and pinion.

Now I am making a guess here about the distance from the main bearing plate and the centre of the diff housing, but I'll just use an arbitrary 300mm.

Using a material coefficient of thermal expansion calculator: https://goodcalculators.com/thermal-exp ... alculator/

300mm of Aluminium that has a temperature increase of 80*C, would have thermal expansion of 0.5328mm.
But 300mm of steel (the output shaft) would have thermal expansion for the same temperature change, of 0.312mm.

So the aluminium case would grow 0.2208mm more than the shaft would, with an 80*C increase in temperature.
By my guestimations, that would increase the ring gear to pinion clearance by, ummmm, 0.2208mm..............

I couldn't find any numbers for the ring gear to clearance/backlash numbers. But in my old Haynes manual for the Alfetta, using the special tool and the procedure in the manual, it talks about backlash numbers between 0.13 and 0.18mm.
It's probably safe to say that if during the backlash setup procedure, the case and the output shaft were heated up another 80*C, that the backlash numbers would go from being 0.13-0.18mm to 0.35-0.4mm.

Certainly food for thought and might well be justification for fabricating a steel rear half of the transaxle case. Yes it would weigh more, but the expansion of case and shaft would be (basically) the same.
