Project 2 : front mount SA GTV 3.0 - Sei diff

Post by kevin »

Hi , as mentioned in other post I am building another race car with a bm gearbox upfront and the alfa Sei diff . Basically there are four other GTV like this in our group but are all producing excess off 450 hp hence the gearbox upfront . This obviously nothing new with Dawie from Glenwood perfecting this competively over 20 years ago with the car in pic below . I still question if their ever has been a faster built Alfa than this mighty twin turbo in all these years .
Last data captured on this car was way over 600hp .
Anyway i find that my current race car with the 3.7 in it is so perfectly balanced and not easy to things get out of shape on the track so this will be an Interesting comparison as I will initially apply all same shock specs , ride height etc .
I will post some pics off roll cage to start , then body work , down to clutch assembly and adaptors .

I started by welding a 6 point roll cage . i have tried to pick up all the necessary points without over complicating the design and at the same time make it as safe as possible. the cage runs right through to shock tower . i will also make a triangular brace in the engine bay but its difficult to get clearance above engine and below windscreen wiper . Now the car will be painted by an Alfa specialist Fernando at Lake Avenue Autobody in Benoni.

To work on car it is easier to put it on its side on double tyres and tie the car to a column . It took eight of us to turn it. Initially it would be to cut out rust and strenghten anti roll bar points but Fernando wanted me to draw and mark it up perfectly before he looked at best way of stitching new tunnel in .

Wow, nice project this!

How are the cars behaving with the gearbox upfront (weight distribution and so on)?

Alan,it will interesting to see how unbalanced the car is . some more pics . notice the Sei crossmember is 20mm thicker. i will still use the original one from GTV6 but i will drill holes and put suports in where the diff bolts to the crossmember.
I brought support work into engine bay incase I cut later on for space for turbos - but thats later dream

Thanks duk , it's still under wraps . No family member knows except the old old man and it's actually a project for both of us to keep him busy in his later years . My aim is to finish car by January . Probably not possible but will try . Got some pics of rear diff mount . It's really difficult as some guys cut the entire section of the Sei out and weld it in , but I don't have one . Other is to mount it solid but I think it will crack over time . So I think I will hang it from inside boot /trunk . Was drawing many pics of it last week to find solution. Main problem is to keep it high enough without disc touching body and still keep diff high enough off floor .

Here is my Sei diff mounting..

I cut off the original mounts and welded a new piece in. It has some threaded nuts welded in and the loose part gets bolted to it. The diff then bolts to that. I just need to make another bracket on the back of the diff to stop the rubber from being pulled down on only one side.
