PowerMods911 - GTV6 2.5 TT - Race Car

Post by PowerMods911 »

Started the project in all seriousness in April 2007, had a personal set back in 2008 which set the project back for 4 years, but finally made it to the track in May 2012.

I'll dig up pics as we progressed and post them on the forum. For now I have two back in April 2007 when life started :D

It's an original SA 3.0l car, with a wide body kit and some serious rubber on. Engine is a 12 valve 2.5l fuel injected motor with 3.0l sleeves and pistons, pushing it a 2.8l. It has twin Mitsubish T4 turbos, boosting at about 0.6bar. Motor is very smooth and has massive low end torque with max power coming in at 5500 rpm, all driven by the PowerMods ECU. Drive is through a front mounted gearbox.

Why do you call it GTV 911?

It sounds really wrong to me... :|

My race number is 911, and without any particular reason I matched the GTV to the race number. Don't fear the race number 911 is TOTALLY unrelated to the Porche 911. Hopefully the thread title GTV6 2.8TT makes up and clears any confusion as to what the car is. :D

Here's a picture of it on the track with Kevin hot on my heels... PS I borrowed the pic from one of his threads.

Having battled for more that 6 months to break into the 1:16's at zwartkops, I felt that the front suspension mods were far to complicated for me to understsnd and come to grips with. I always battled with understeer. Finally I decided to fit the stock standard GTV6 front suspension back on. Took the original suspension off my 2.5 donor car and sent it in to be refurbished with new bushes and ball joints. Problem was that the refurbished suspension would not be back on time for our next race. Decided to inspect and tighten the entire front end suspesnion before going out again, this we finished at 7pm the night before the race. With no time for wheel alignment we did it ourselves with a piece of string and some visual observations. During quali there was no understeer and I managed a 1:155 but noticed the driver side tyre wasn't happy, too much scrubbing on the outside, did some more alignment in the pits. 1st race, the car felt a whole lot better in the corners, to the extent that I got slightly over confident as can be seen on the youtube clip posted by Giuseppe. Nevertheless with a laptime of 1:135 I've come to accept that the front suspension modifications MUST be working. Now that all the new suspension parts are back I will be changing it out over the next 2 weeks. My thinking is, if my times go backwards I can always refit the "old modifcations" back.

I'll be posting the suspension changes as i go along, here are some pics to start off with.

What kind of balljoint did you use for the upsidedown conversion?

I bought the car with the mods, so I'm not 100% sure. I've been told it's a chevy 2 ball joint. Went to GM motors with the sample and true to form they couldn't tell me. I suspect it's a 1977 Chevy 4100 or 4200 ball joint. I'll keep enquiring, there are a couple of suspension specialist shops in Pretoria that I'm hoping will be able to assist me. Even though there are no markings or codes on the ball joint they should as I have the sample to show them.

Giuliettevo2, friends at GM have come back to me and although not 100% certain they believe its from a A4 or AQ series Komando. Apparantly no stock in South Africa (SA) so I'll battle to get my hands on OEM part, I'll look around for some NON OEM part. As a thought I'll post the dimensions on the forum and perhaps some of you in the GM strong hold counties could check it out.

Kevin, yes the entire front suspension is off, as is the steering rack. Started fitting the original 2.5 GTV suspension on. So far only done part of the left. Fitted the left lower control arm, went well. Then onto the top contol arm, what a mission. Couldn't get the old one off. Eventually had to take the left side turbo, and exhaust down pipes off. The upper contol arm bolt still wouldn't budge, after some major persuasion it eventually came off.

Fitted the top contol arm and the coil over shock. Will post pics later

Left side coilover sping, LCA, TCA refitted. Note I've kept the torsion bars, reconsidering taking them off.
