I thought I would share a super brilliant build by Mario and Bjorn on one of their race GTVs. This one featuring here is a front mount gearbox while the other GTV is the normal set up with 12v 3.7 engine.
Competing in a class way above the original hp figures that it raced in the 80s it was necessary to go to the front gearbox route. The car raced with the transaxle set up for a while but unfortunately due to the short life of the standard gearbox with reinforced clutch housings (courteous of MD) alternative set up was sought. Yes you can get a straight cut box from UK but the Rand ( currency) is so poor that it was far cheaper in long run to go for a more durable solution. For the purists, the second car that runs the box in the original place it has a special cut box made in SA to run in another class with its 12v motor.
The original motor was developed by Dawie at Glenwood but as time went on Mario and Bjorn went on their own new route to keep developing the motor.
Bjorn has given over 40 pics of the build which I will slowly post up.
The basics are it has a 3.0 crank, 100mm Wosner pistons, 304 deg Newman cams, Kent springs, Cat Cams vernier pulley, throttle bodies just to start the set up.
The gearbox is the BMW 5 speed ZF ( E36 M3) with BMW diff. When viewing this build you gotta appreciate its not their job to build cars but it's a hobby/ passion and done on the side while they are running a business.

These are a few of the basic pics of the two cars. The "red" 12v one might be for a write up another time. Also a few pics to show the basic set up.

i have divided the photographs into sperate sections which I will download now. This GTV uses same flywheel and clutch as on my car. This set up works perfectly for using the BMW M5 performance clutch from Helix. This unit has the same spline count to suit the 5 speed E36 ZF gearbox. Pics show the basic alignment set up. Mario and Bjorn used the 188mm diff as this gives you far more options regarding final drive ratios unlike the limited ratios you get on the Alfa Sei. Diff ratios on the Alfa Sei diff can be found on this link

A nice cowl with air intake for the gearbox to keep temps down. The exhausts are wrapped at this point as well.
It must be noted that there are budgets that have to kept and unfortunately with the bad Rand at 23:1 to the Pound it's not an option to import well tuned headers made by the likes of Extreme Tuning BG.

Mario and Bjorn came up with a good solution on the lower A arms to correct the new roll centres without having to weld the uprights. Where the ball joint would usually go to be cut off to facilitate a Rod end. This was done at slight angle to stop any binding. The welding was done in accordance to that specified for cast iron .
The usual high quality tried and trusted Vari brakes fitted. Note the lower A arm pics are still in assembly at time taken. The two cars using this same lower A arm set up have safely competed for the last three years.

Some pics to follow from an awesome test day in February earlier this year . Huge thanks to Mario for letting test both his cars ( the 3.7 12V GTV6 with gearbox in original position and his 3.4 front mount Blue /white GTV6 as shown in this build . Must say yhe 3.4 has such a special engine note !
Also some pics from trackday at Zwartkops a few days ago courtesy of Gavin
