I thought I would share a super brilliant build by Mario and Bjorn on one of their race GTVs. This one featuring here is a front mount gearbox while the other GTV is the normal set up with 12v 3.7 engine.
Competing in a class way above the original hp figures that it raced in the 80s it was necessary to go to the front gearbox route. The car raced with the transaxle set up for a while but unfortunately due to the short life of the standard gearbox with reinforced clutch housings (courteous of MD) alternative set up was sought. Yes you can get a straight cut box from UK but the Rand ( currency) is so poor that it was far cheaper in long run to go for a more durable solution. For the purists, the second car that runs the box in the original place it has a special cut box made in SA to run in another class with its 12v motor.
The original motor was developed by Dawie at Glenwood but as time went on Mario and Bjorn went on their own new route to keep developing the motor.
Bjorn has given over 40 pics of the build which I will slowly post up.
The basics are it has a 3.0 crank, 100mm Wosner pistons, 304 deg Newman cams, Kent springs, Cat Cams vernier pulley, throttle bodies just to start the set up.
The gearbox is the BMW 5 speed ZF ( E36 M3) with BMW diff. When viewing this build you gotta appreciate its not their job to build cars but it's a hobby/ passion and done on the side while they are running a business.
