With the oldest GTV6 nearing 40 years in service, a forum to document projects and restoration seems sensible.

Alfetta GTV 1800 Track day project

Post by KevinR »

This will be an evolving project as already you probably see it’s only an 1800 from the tile and wondering why myself and Theo are putting so much effort in but not touching the motor …… yet. The plan was to find a really good rust free GTV in South Africa and bring it to the UK where both Theo and live. The irony is the car was really well restored for road use by Dirk quite a few years but now we want to take it next level which involves all the safety features along with all the mechanical upgrades .
Originally the car had a 2.0 motor but the car was fitted with a motor that came out a rare South African Group 1 Giulietta, so it should still be quite a lot of fun.
There was no major rush so this has helped us source parts sensibly which were once “ loved “ .
Before the car was sent to the UK I got and exhaust fitted while I was out on holiday in SA as labour is far cheaper and mostly you can work with the installer to make sure it’s to your specifications. Most exhaust places don’t know much about classic cars and how to maximise ground clearance. Noise Boyz in Randburg did a great job with this stainless steel system . Pics attached are from when the car was in SA.
You will notice the bumperless modifications. Out interest it cost more in transport to bring to the UK than the actual purchase cost.
The car was secured really well and wrapped ( still breathable) before the container was sent off .

Once the car was here in UK and all necessary custom work was done it could be taken to our rented lock up which sits on the neighbouring farm where Alex Jupe has his work shop. A few minutes up the road is CSR and Richard Melvin.
As this is purely a hobby for Theo and myself most work is done on weekends when we can escape work etc .
The basic plan for the car was to start with brake upgrade, suspension upgrade then followed by all the safety features ie seats , cage etc .
As budget was really tight it was not an option to buy new brake kits but try use what we had in stock . We had Brembo callipers already so we needed custom discs and brackets. Only man around to do this to our spec was Stavros Presvytis in Greece. We needed needed a 290mm by 28mm disc and custom offset bells for four bolt hubs. A side note : a 75 four bolt upright has a different offset to Alfetta 2.0 four bolt upright !!
I had the callipers powdercoated and rebuilt by Wayne at EMC racing. Pics show the cars journey on UK roads with the SA plates . Followed by break kit .

Luckily I had a spare new set of Bilstein coil overs that were custom made for me in SA quite a few years ago so after checking them on shock dyno and checking curves are all still good this would be used . The torsion bars would remain so this would be an assisted system . A 350lbs spring (62kg) plus helper waa selected . Yes I realise it could be a lot more but we did not want “full track day “ kit but with some flexibility for the shitty roads. The RSR usually uses 100kg to 115kg when assisting with torsion bars and a 50kg rear spring. The current torsion bars are from 2.5 GTV so that’s roughly 50kg /cm . The torsion bars would have to adjust by roughly 20mm which is simplly 1.5 mm per spline and thirteen count splines rotated clockwise on left side and anti clockwise on right side. As the car sits the helper must just be squashed .
Richard Melvin supplied 250 lbs rear springs and platforms as the old Harvey Bailey ones I raised the car to much. At the moment it’s 17cm under rear jacking point and 16cm under front jacking point. Pics attached of removing bars and resetting as per factory manual

The wheels are always an issue when you trying to find something within budget . Problem is there are very few suppliers a 4x 98 pcd and we wanted 16” as tyre availability is so much better than the 15” range . The only supplier who had an off the shelf wheel was Compomotive but the spigot would have to be machined out.
This wheel was only option and as the car was beyond been one for the purists we thought this wheel would be perfect.
We went for the Yokohama as a few mates enjoyed them and they offered the right profile on the 16” rim

As luck would have it I located a second hand roll cage from CSR . It’s good enough for track days but can be upgraded at later stage if needed . Cage was sent in to be powder coated .

Nice little project Kevin. Could do with a more flashy front nudge bar...Got a feeling Zamani has got a spare one going cheap.

I made some new central jacking points made for low spoiler cars. What better place to try this out. A second hand 29mm anti roll bar fitted on new polyurethane rubbers along with new superfex castor arm bushes.
Roll bar mounting points had to be welded up as the SA factory kinda missed spot welding these properly and often tore when upgrading.

Hey Kevin. What do you think of a custom hub cap for your wheels, perhaps powder coated and an Alfa centre logo?

Generally we are not allowed any caps when on the track incase they come off and also all wheel nuts have to be visible. Always good to show your nuts off MD !!! . I do have some centre caps with an Alfa badge but yes needs to be finished . Another weekend and fluids, plug service will be good to go .
